CREAKING/CRUNCHING TYPE NOISE FROM FUEL TANK AREA

CREAKING OR CRUNCHING NOISE FROM FUEL TANK AREA - REPOSITION FUEL TANK FLANGE

(Revised to add Figure 1.)

VEHICLES AFFECTED: 1987-1988 ALLANTE -----------------

Some 1987-1988 Allantes may experience a condition of a creaking or crunching noise from the rear floor pan while turning. This noise may increase when the body flexes (e.g. turning into a driveway or going over a curb).

This condition may be caused by the fuel tank flange contacting the strap mounting bracket and/or the mounting strap at the left (driver side) forward location.

To repair this condition use the following procedure:

1. Raise car to expose the fuel tank.

2. Inspect for the fuel tank flange contacting the strap mounting bracket and/or mounting strap at the left forward location, refer to Figure 1.

3. Bend the fuel tank flange downward behind the mounting bracket using channel-lock pliers or equivalent to eliminate the contact. When bending the flange downward, there should still be clearance between the mounting strap and the fuel tank flange.

NOTE : If the fuel tank flange is trapped between the mounting bracket and strap, it may be necessary to remove the strap before trying to bend the fuel tank flange. Support the tank using a floor jack.

Use the most applicable labour operation from the Canadian Labour Time Guide and claim 0.4 hours.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
