CONVERTIBLE TOP HARD TO LATCH IN REAR

VEHICLES AFFECTED: 1988-89 "V"

Some 1988-1989 Allantes may experience a condition of the convertible top being hard to latch at the rear pull down. This condition may be caused by a misaligned hook, or a bent hook adjustment bracket, not allowing proper hook to pull down unit engagement. To repair this condition use the following procedure:

1. Unlatch the rear bow and open the bootwell cover. Bring the rear bow down with the bootwell cover open until the hook is just above the pull down unit jaws, and inspect hook alignment. Refer to Figure 1.

2. Raise rear bow to its locked position. Using a 2.5mm Allen type wrench turn the set screw clockwise to move hook forward, or counterclockwise to adjust hook rearward (refer to Figure 2) until hook is centered in pull down unit jaws. Refer to Figure 1.

3. If set screw travel is insufficient to obtain proper hook position, inspect the set screw bracket for damage.

4. If the bracket is bent, reform the bracket to its original position (refer to Figure 3) using pliers. Repeat steps 1 and 2.

IMPORTANT: Use caution when reforming the bracket. Excessive force will cause the bracket to break.

5. Close bootwell cover and latch rear bow.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
