Some 1987-90 Allantes may exhibit a noise from the fuel tank area. This noise is most likely noticed when the body is put in torsion, such as driving into a driveway or crossing a speed bump. The noise may be described as a creak, groan, crunch, or squeak.
This condition may be caused by insufficient fuel tank to body and/or fuel tank strap to fuel tank isolation.
To repair this condition the following service procedure should be performed:
1. Drain and remove the fuel tank using the procedures outlined in Cadillac Allante Service Information Manual, Section 6C.
2. Inspect the fuel tank for the presence of seven isolator strips located as shown in Figure 1. Individual isolation strips may be ordered as P/N #3523199.
3. Add four isolation strips, P/N #3523199, along the front of the fuel tank as shown in Figure 2.
4. Add 3M No. 5430 Squeak Reduction Tape or equivalent to each tank strap between the strap and tank (two strips required for each strap). Cut length to 770mm (30.3"), peel off adhesive backing protective strip, and apply to strap overlapping as necessary. Refer to Figure 2.
5. Raise and position the fuel tank to the vehicle. Position fuel tank straps in their original location and torque the fasteners to 35 N-m (25ft. lbs.).
6. Assure that the fuel tank weld flange is not contacting the tank strap support anchor or the strap. If contact is noted, reform the flange to provide clearance.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
