Some 1987-1992 Allantes may experience a condition where the glove box door binds or is difficult to open. This may be caused by the glove box release handle contacting the glove box cover and not allowing the release handle to travel far enough to release the lock rods.
To repair this condition use the following procedure:
1. Remove the glove box door trim pad using the appropriate Allante Service Information Manual.
2. Using a soft top quarter glass shim, PIN 1638640, cut two shims to the size of the lower jaw (refer to Figure 1) and bond the shim to the right and left side with Loctite 401 or equivalent.
3. Reinstall glove box door trim pad. Verify glove box door release operation. If condition is not corrected, repeat the above procedure and add an additional shim.
Parts are currently available from CANSPO.
For vehicles being repaired under warranty use .3 hour.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
