CASSETTE TAPE WON'T EJECT INOP DOOR-BIND REPAIR

SUBJECT: CASSETTE TAPE WON'T EJECT

MODELS AFFECTED: 1990 ALLANTES

Some 1990 Allante owners may experience an intermittent condition where a tape will fail to eject. The stop/eject button, when pressed, will cause the tape to rise up from the player, catch and fall back into the play position, or repeatedly cycle up and down. The condition is very dependent upon the type of tape used or tape dimension. Some tapes will operate properly and others will repeatedly fail to eject.

- The customer's tape can be retrieved by pressing stop/eject and pulling the tape out of the deck with needle-nose pliers as it rises up to the eject position. Be careful not to scratch the tape door.

- All 1991 Allantes have a different combination panel faceplate and tape door design to prevent sticking. The new design provides a larger faceplate opening, assures alignment of the deck and faceplate, and corrects an interference condition possible with the tape door and some thicker tapes.

To repair the condition request a pre-exchange combination panel and tape deck from Dayton Speedometer per the procedure in DSIB 90-1-1. Pre-exchange parts are available; and all repaired or exchanged parts from Dayton will contain modifications to the panel faceplate, tape door, and tape mechanism.

IMPORTANT: Remove the CD player from the combination panel before returning the "core" to Dayton. Refer to Section 9A for procedure. The pre-exchange unit requested will come with a tape deck but without a CD player. The CD player which comes with the vehicle will have to be transferred into the pre-exchange unit received from Dayton.

When reinstalling the combo panel, verify that the exchanged or repaired part is corrected by using the Gold Key tape in the Owner's Manual package before bolting the combination panel in place. Insert and eject the tape several times with side one and side two of the tape pointing up. For warranty purposes use Labor Operation N4150 Panel, Combination R&R at 1.0 hour. This includes transferring the CD unit into the pre-exchange combination panel.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
