Condition

Some customers may comment on a no reverse condition.

Cause

The cause may be an internal fault in the TCC PWM solenoid.

Correction

Follow the service procedure below for diagnosis and repair.

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information. Refer to SI Document ID #792999.
  2. Place a suitable drain pan under the transmission fluid drain plug.
  3. Remove the transmission fluid drain plug.
  4. Inspect the transmission fluid for signs of overheating:
  5. • If the transmission fluid has signs of overheating and/or a burnt smell, the transmission is going to require internal repairs. Refer to Transmission Fluid Checking Procedure, SI Document ID #856433.
    • If the transmission fluid is "normal" color and no burnt odor, continue with the next step.
  6. Remove the transmission fluid pan and filter. Refer to Automatic Transmission Fluid/Filter Replacement . Refer to SI Document ID #792999.

  7. Object Number: 795920 Size: SH
  8. Disconnect the electrical wiring harness connector (1) from the TCC PWM solenoid (2).

  9. Object Number: 795835 Size: SH
  10. Using a small screwdriver or pick, remove the TCC PWM solenoid retainer from the control valve body.

  11. Object Number: 802251 Size: SH

Important: Loosen, DO NOT REMOVE the valve body bolts and manual shift detent bolt.

  12. Loosen, DO NOT remove the 8 E8 Inverted TORX® bolts on the valve body.

  13. Object Number: 812731 Size: SH
  14. Loosen, DO NOT remove the rear manual shift detent bolt (3).
  15. Lower the valve body enough to gain clearance for the TCC solenoid to clear the transmission case.
  16. Remove the TCC PWM solenoid (1) from the control valve body.
  17. Inspect the removed TCC PWM solenoid (1). The removed plastic connector may be labeled "2690".
  18. Important:

       • The "2690" TCC PWM solenoid is the suspect solenoid and should NOT BE REUSED.
       • The new TCC PWM solenoid, P/N 96042599, is labeled "7792" and should be the ONLY solenoid used.

  19. Install the new TCC PWM solenoid, P/N 96042599 labeled "7792", (1) into the control valve body.
  20. Install the TCC PWM solenoid valve retainer into the control valve body.
  21. Connect the electrical wiring harness connector to the TCC PWM solenoid.

  22. Object Number: 802251 Size: SH

Important: If the bolts are tightened at random, valve bores may become distorted and inhibit proper valve operation.

  23. Tighten the control valve body assembly bolts in sequence.
  24. Tighten

        • Tighten the 8 inverted TORX® valve body bolts to 11 N·m (97 lb in).
        • Tighten the manual shift detent spring bolt to 11 N·m (97 lb in).

Important: Fluid pan gaskets are reusable. Replace the gasket ONLY if the sealing surface is damaged.

  25. Install the transmission fluid pan and filter. Refer to Automatic Transmission Fluid/Filter Replacement . Refer to SI Document ID #792999.
  26. Important: The oil drain plug and oil fill plug must be inspected for damage to the threads or O-rings before reinstalling. If damage is found, replace with a new plug.

  27. Install the transmission drain plug.
  28. Tighten
Tighten the fluid drain plug to 20 N·m (15 lb ft).

  29. Fill the transmission. Refer to Transmission Fluid Checking Procedure SI Document ID #856433.
  30. Road test the vehicle.
