Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 333146  Size: SH
  1. Install the J 42640 to the steering column.
  2. Remove the tire and wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation .

  3. Object Number: 754900  Size: SH

    Caution: Failure to disconnect the intermediate shaft from the rack and pinion stub shaft can result in damage to the steering gear and/or intermediate shaft. This damage can cause loss of steering control which could result in personal injury.

    Notice: The wheels of the vehicle must be straight ahead and the steering column in the LOCK position before disconnecting the steering column or intermediate shaft from the steering gear. Failure to do so will cause the coil assembly in the steering column to become uncentered which will cause damage to the coil assembly.

  4. Remove the intermediate shaft lower pinch bolt.
  5. Disconnect the intermediate shaft from the power steering gear.
  6. Remove the outer tie rod. Refer to Rack and Pinion Outer Tie Rod End Replacement .

  7. Object Number: 802792  Size: SH
  8. Remove the power steering gear bolts.
  9. Carefully reposition the power steering gear in order to access the power steering gear dust boot.

  10. Object Number: 816385  Size: SH
  11. Remove the jam nut from the inner tie rod.

  12. Object Number: 816379  Size: SH
  13. Remove the rack and pinion boot outer clamp.

  14. Object Number: 816382  Size: SH
  15. Remove the rack and pinion boot inner clamp.
  16. Important: After removing the boot, inspect the inner tie rod for evidence of corrosion or contamination. If none is evident, continue with the repair. If corrosion or contamination is evident, replace the steering gear.

  17. Remove the rack and pinion boot (2).

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 816382  Size: SH
  1. Install the rack and pinion boot (2).
  2. Install a NEW rack and pinion boot inner clamp (1).
  3. Using the J 22610 crimp the rack and pinion boot clamp.

  4. Object Number: 816379  Size: SH
  5. Install the rack and pinion boot outer clamp.

  6. Object Number: 816385  Size: SH
  7. Install the jam nut to the inner tie rod.

  8. Object Number: 802792  Size: SH
  9. Position the power steering gear.
  10. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  11. Install the power steering gear bolts.
  12. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 95 N·m (70 lb ft).

  13. Install the outer tie rod. Refer to Rack and Pinion Outer Tie Rod End Replacement .

  14. Object Number: 754900  Size: SH
  15. Connect the intermediate shaft to the power steering gear.
  16. Install the intermediate shaft lower pinch bolt.
  17. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  18. Install the tire and wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation .

  19. Object Number: 333146  Size: SH
  20. Remove the J 42640 from the steering column.
  21. Adjust the front toe. Refer to Front Toe Adjustment .
