The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.
Condition/Concern:
Unacceptable shift quality after transmission repair or software/hardware change.
Recommendation/Instructions:
General Motors recommends clearing shift adapts and using the following relearn procedure in these situations:
- Transmission replace or major overhaul.
- TCM replace or reflash
- Valve body replacement.
After any of the above repairs, the adaptive values have to be erased. These cells then need to be refilled to get an optimal shift quality. However, only coast downshifts will require special care as described below:
Coast Downshift Adapt Procedure
Drive Range (D5) at normal transmission operating temperature.
- 45 mph, light brake to a stop, about 13 seconds.
- 45 mph, moderate brake to a stop, about 6 seconds.
- 25 mph, coast to about 5 mph.
Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
