Engine Coolant Fan Replacement LP1, LY7

Removal Procedure

    Caution: An electric fan under the hood can start up even when the engine is not running and can injure you. Keep hands, clothing and tools away from any underhood electric fan.

    Caution: To help avoid personal injury or damage to the vehicle, a bent, cracked, or damaged fan blade or housing should always be replaced.

  1. Disconnect the battery negative cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection .
  2. Drain the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .

  3. Object Number: 788982  Size: SH
  4. Disconnect the surge tank hose (3).
  5. Remove the fan shroud to radiator bolt (1).
  6. Remove the fan shroud to air plenum bolt (2).
  7. Remove remaining fan shroud to radiator bolts.

  9. Using J 38185 disconnect the upper radiator hose at the radiator.
  10. Remove the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement for the 2.8L engine or Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement for the 3.6L (LY7) engine.

  11. Object Number: 789019  Size: SH
  12. Remove the screw (1) from the A/C line retaining clip (3).
  13. Rotate the retaining clip.

  14. Object Number: 788985  Size: SH
  15. Remove the electric fan harness clip (1).
  16. Disconnect the fan motor electrical connectors (2).
  17. Separate the wiring harness from the fan shroud.
  18. Remove the right fan shroud bolt.
  19. Remove the left fan shroud bolt.
  20. Important: Carefully remove the electric cooling fan assembly from the vehicle, to protect the radiator core.

  21. Pull upward on the fan assembly, removing the assembly from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure

    Important: Carefully install the electric cooling fan assembly into the vehicle, to protect the radiator core.

  1. Install the cooling fan assembly to the vehicle.
  2. Ensure that the electric cooling fan is in the lower attaching points.
  3. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  4. Install the upper fan shroud to radiator mounting bolts.
  5. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 6.5 N·m (58 lb in).

  6. Install the electric cooling fan shroud to plenum mounting bolt (2).
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 6.5 N·m (58 lb in).

  8. Connect the surge tank hose to radiator (3).

  9. Object Number: 788983  Size: SH
  10. Connect the wiring harness electrical connectors to the cooling fan motors.

  11. Object Number: 788985  Size: SH
  12. Connect the fan electrical harness retainers (1) to the fan assembly.
  13. Attach the remaining wiring harness retaining clips to the fan shroud.

  14. Object Number: 789019  Size: SH
  15. Install the A/C line retaining clip screw (1) to the fan shroud.
  16. Tighten
    Tighten the screw to 1 N·m (9 lb in).

  17. Position the radiator hose with the mark facing up.
  18. Position J 38185 to the clamp and position the clamp on the radiator hose.
  19. Fill the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .
  20. Install the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement for the 2.8L engine or Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement for the 3.6L (LY7) engine.
  21. Connect the battery negative cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection .

Removal Procedure

  5. Remove the fan shroud to radiator bolts.

  7. Using J 38185 disconnect the upper radiator hose at the radiator (1).
  8. Remove the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement .

  9. Object Number: 789019  Size: SH
  10. Remove the screw (1) from the A/C line retaining clip (3).
  11. Rotate the retaining clip.

  12. Object Number: 788985  Size: SH
  13. Remove the electric fan harness clip (1).
  14. Disconnect the fan motor electrical connectors (2).
  15. Separate the wiring harness from the fan shroud.
  16. Important: Carefully remove the electric cooling fan assembly from the vehicle, to protect the radiator core.

  17. Pull upward on the fan assembly, removing the assembly from the vehicle.

  10. Object Number: 789019  Size: SH
  11. Install the A/C line retaining clip screw (1) to the fan shroud.
  12. Tighten
    Tighten the screw to 1 N·m (9 lb in).

  13. Position the radiator hose with the mark facing up.
  14. Position J 38185 to the clamp (1) and position the clamp on the radiator hose.
  15. Fill the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .
  16. Install the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement .
  17. Connect the battery negative cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection .
