Steering Knuckle Replacement AWD

Removal Procedure

Notice: The ball stud must not rotate during disassembly or reassembly. Hand tools must be used to keep the ball stud from rotating. If air tools are used and the stud is allowed to rotate, damage to the ball stud and/or stud mounting hole may occur.

Notice: Do not free the ball stud by using a pickle fork or a wedge-type tool. Damage to the seal or bushing may result.

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle.
  2. Remove the tire and wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation.
  3. Remove the wheel bearing/hub. Refer to Front Wheel Bearing and Hub Replacement.
  4. Remove the outer tie rod to steering knuckle. Refer to Steering Linkage Outer Tie Rod Replacement.
  5. Remove the brake hose bracket to steering knuckle retaining bolts. Refer to Front Brake Hose Replacement.

  6. Object Number: 1982888  Size: SH
  7. Remove the steering knuckle (1) from the upper control arm. Refer to Shock Absorber and Spring Assembly Replacement.
  8. Remove the steering knuckle (1) lower from the control arm. Refer to Lower Control Arm Replacement.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 1982888  Size: SH
  1. Install the steering knuckle (1) to the lower control arm. Refer to Lower Control Arm Replacement.
  2. Install the steering knuckle (1) in the upper control arm. Refer to to Shock Absorber and Spring Assembly Replacement
  3. Install the brake hose bracket to the steering knuckle retaining bolts. Refer to Front Brake Hose Replacement.
  4. Install the outer tie rod to the steering knuckle. Refer to Steering Linkage Outer Tie Rod Replacement.
  5. Install the wheel bearing/hub. Refer to Front Wheel Bearing and Hub Replacement.
  6. Install the tire and wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation.
  7. Lower the vehicle.

Steering Knuckle Replacement RWD

Special Tools

    • J 24319-B Universal Steering Linkage Puller
    • J 43631 Ball Joint Remover

Removal Procedure

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle.
  2. Remove the tire and wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation.
  3. Remove the wheel bearing/hub. Refer to Front Wheel Bearing and Hub Replacement.

  4. Object Number: 794579  Size: SH
  5. Remove the outer tie rod to steering knuckle retaining nut.

  6. Object Number: 643351  Size: SH
  7. Using J 24319-B disconnect the tie rod from the steering knuckle.

  8. Object Number: 750841  Size: SH
  9. Remove the lower stabilizer shaft link retaining nut.
  10. Remove the stabilizer shaft link from the lower control arm.

  11. Object Number: 750897  Size: SH
  12. Remove the upper control arm to steering knuckle pinch bolt.
  13. Separate the upper control arm from steering knuckle.

  14. Object Number: 750956  Size: SH
  15. Remove the lower ball joint retaining nut and discard.

  16. Object Number: 750829  Size: SH
  17. Using J 43631 disconnect the lower ball joint from the steering knuckle.
  18. Remove the steering knuckle from the lower ball joint stud.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the steering knuckle to the lower ball joint stud.

  2. Object Number: 750956  Size: SH
  3. Install a new lower ball joint retaining nut.
  4. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  5. Tighten the nut in the following order:
  6. Tighten

    1. Tighten the nut to 40 N·m (30 lb ft).
    2. Rotate the nut an additional 120 degrees.

  7. Install the upper control arm to steering knuckle.
  8. Install the upper control arm to steering knuckle pinch bolt and nut.
  9. Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 60 N·m (44 lb ft).

    Important: Apply threadlocker 242 or equivalent to the threads of the stabilizer shaft link.

  10. Connect the stabilizer shaft link to the lower control arm.
  11. Install the stabilizer shaft link retaining nut.
  12. Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 100 N·m (74 lb ft).

  13. Connect the outer tie rod to the steering knuckle.
  14. Install the outer tie rod retaining nut.
  15. Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 65 N·m (48 lb ft).

  16. Install the wheel bearing/hub. Refer to Front Wheel Bearing and Hub Replacement.
  17. Install the tire and wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation.
  18. Lower the vehicle.
