Inspection Procedure
- Remove the wheel drive shaft inner joint and boot.
- Remove the wheel drive shaft tripod bushing (1) from the tripod housing (5).
- Remove the wheel drive shaft tripod housing (1) from the wheel drive shaft.
- Remove the wheel drive shaft tripod joint boot bushing (1).
- Using a suitable cleaner, remove the excess grease from the tripod assembly.
- Inspect the following items for damage or excessive wear:
• | The wheel drive shaft tripod boot |
• | The wheel drive shaft tripod assembly |
• | The wheel drive shaft tripod joint housing |
• | The wheel drive shaft tripod joint bushing |
- Steps 7 thru 10 are for those vehicles that are equipped with a CV type inner joint.
Note: All traces of the old lubricant and any contaminates must be removed.
- Clean and inspect the following parts thoroughly with clean solvent:
• | The wheel drive shaft exposed end |
- Thoroughly air dry all of the parts.
- Inspect the internal components for excessive wear, damage and smoothness of operation.
- If any of the internal parts are found to be excessively worn or damaged, replace the wheel drive shaft inner joint and boot.
- If any of the internal parts are found to be excessively worn or damaged, replace the wheel drive shaft inner joint and boot.
