Front Disc Brake Hardware Replacement JE5, J55 (RWD)

Removal Procedure

Warning: Refer to Brake Dust Warning in the Preface section.

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle.
  2. Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation.

  3. Object Number: 1969851  Size: SH
  4. Using a backup wrench on the brake caliper guide pin, remove the brake caliper guide pin bolts (1).
  5. Caution: Support the brake caliper with heavy mechanic wire, or equivalent, whenever it is separated from its mount and the hydraulic flexible brake hose is still connected. Failure to support the caliper in this manner will cause the flexible brake hose to bear the weight of the caliper, which may cause damage to the brake hose and in turn may cause a brake fluid leak.

  6. Remove the brake caliper and support with heavy mechanics wire or equivalent.
  7. Remove the outer brake pad (1).
  8. Remove the inner brake pad (2).
  9. Remove the brake pad springs.
  10. Note: The upper brake caliper guide pin is equipped with a bushing.

  11. Remove the upper brake caliper guide pin (1).
  12. Remove the upper guide pin seal (2).

  14. Remove the lower brake caliper guide pin (1).
  15. Remove the lower guide pin seal (2).

Installation Procedure

  1. Inspect the brake caliper guide pins, seals and brake pad springs for damage and/or corrosion. Refer to Front Disc Brake Mounting and Hardware Inspection.

  2. Object Number: 1969860  Size: SH
  3. Apply a thin coat of high temperature silicone brake lubricant the brake caliper guide pin.
  4. Install the lower brake caliper guide pin (1) to the guide pin seal (2).
  5. Ensure the guide pin seal is fully seated in the groove of the brake caliper guide pin.

  6. Install the lower guide pin and seal to the brake caliper bracket.
  7. Ensure the guide pin seal is fully seated in the groove of the brake caliper bracket.

    Note: The upper brake caliper guide pin is equipped with a bushing.

  8. Apply a thin coat of high temperature silicone brake lubricant the brake caliper guide pin.
  9. Install the upper brake caliper guide pin (1) to the guide pin seal (2).
  10. Ensure the guide pin seal is fully seated in the groove of the brake caliper guide pin.

  11. Install the upper guide pin and seal to the brake caliper bracket.
  12. Ensure the guide pin seal is fully seated in the groove of the brake caliper bracket.

  13. Install the brake pad springs.

  15. Install the outer brake pad (1).
  16. Install the inner brake pad (2).
  17. Note: If reusing the brake caliper guide pin bolts, the threads of the brake caliper guide pin bolts and the threads of the guide pins must be free of residue and debris prior to application of threadlocker in order to ensure proper adhesion and fastener retention.

  18. If reusing the caliper pin bolts, prepare the bolts and the guide pins for assembly:
  19. • Thoroughly clean the residue from the guide pin bolt threads by using denatured alcohol or equivalent and allow to dry.
    • Thoroughly clean the residue from the guide pin threads by using denatured alcohol or equivalent and allow to dry.
  20. Apply threadlocker GM P/N 12345493 (Canadian P/N 10953488), or equivalent to 2/3 of the threaded length of the brake caliper guide pin bolts. Ensure there are no gaps in the threadlocker along the length of the filled area of the bolts.
  21. Allow the threadlocker to cure approximately 10 minutes before installation.

  23. Install the brake caliper to the caliper bracket.
  24. Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution in the Preface section.

  25. Using a backup wrench on the brake caliper guide pins, install the brake caliper guide pin bolts (1) and tighten to  63 N·m (46 lb ft).
  26. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation.

Front Disc Brake Hardware Replacement JE5, JL55 (AWD)

Removal Procedure

Warning: Refer to Brake Dust Warning in the Preface section.

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle.
  2. Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation.
  3. Caution: Support the brake caliper with heavy mechanic wire, or equivalent, whenever it is separated from its mount and the hydraulic flexible brake hose is still connected. Failure to support the caliper in this manner will cause the flexible brake hose to bear the weight of the caliper, which may cause damage to the brake hose and in turn may cause a brake fluid leak.

  12. Remove the upper brake caliper guide pin seal (2).

  14. Remove the lower brake caliper guide pin (1).
  15. Remove the lower brake caliper guide pin seal (2).

Installation Procedure

  1. Inspect the brake caliper guide pins, seals and brake pad springs for damage and/or corrosion. Refer to Front Disc Brake Mounting and Hardware Inspection.

  4. Install the lower brake caliper guide pin (1) to the guide pin seal (2).
  5. Ensure the guide pin seal is fully seated in the groove of the brake caliper guide pin.

  6. Install the lower guide pin and seal to the brake caliper bracket.
  7. Ensure the guide pin seal is fully seated in the groove of the brake caliper bracket.

  8. Apply a thin coat of high temperature silicone brake lubricant to the brake caliper guide pin.
  9. Install the upper brake caliper guide pin (1) to the guide pin seal (2).
  10. Ensure the guide pin seal is fully seated in the groove of the brake caliper guide pin.

  11. Install the upper guide pin and seal to the brake caliper bracket.
  12. Ensure the guide pin seal is fully seated in the groove of the brake caliper bracket.

  13. Install the brake pad springs.

  15. Install the inner brake pad (1).
  16. Install the outer brake pad (2).

Front Disc Brake Hardware Replacement J56

Removal Procedure

Warning: Refer to Brake Dust Warning in the Preface section.

  1. Inspect the fluid level in the brake master cylinder reservoir.
  2. If the brake fluid level is midway between the maximum full point and the minimum allowable level, no brake fluid needs to be removed from the reservoir before proceeding.
  3. If the brake fluid level is higher than midway between the maximum full point and the minimum allowable level, remove brake fluid to the midway point before proceeding.
  4. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle.
  5. Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation.

  7. Remove the lower brake pad guide pin (1).

  8. Object Number: 2092195  Size: SH
  9. Remove the brake pad spring (1).

  11. Remove the upper brake pad guide pin (1).

  12. Object Number: 2092199  Size: SH
  13. Remove the brake caliper bridge pin bolt (1).

  14. Object Number: 2092201  Size: SH
  15. Remove the brake caliper bridge pin (1).

Installation Procedure

  1. Inspect the brake pad guide pins. If damaged, or corroded replace the guide pin. Do not attempt to clean away any corrosion.
  2. Inspect the brake caliper bridge pin and bolt assembly. If damaged, or corroded replace the brake caliper bridge pin and bolt assembly. Do not attempt to clean away any corrosion.
  3. Inspect the brake caliper piston boot for damage and/or deterioration, replace if damaged or deteriorated. Refer to Brake Caliper Inspection.

  5. Install the brake caliper bridge pin (1).
  6. Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution in the Preface section.


    Object Number: 2092199  Size: SH
  7. Install the brake caliper bridge pin bolt (1) and tighten to  33 N·m (24 lb ft).

  8. Object Number: 2092197  Size: SH
  9. Install the upper brake pad guide pin (1).
  10. Ensure the brake pad guide pin is fully seated in the brake caliper housing.


    Object Number: 2092195  Size: SH
  11. Install the brake pad spring (1).

  12. Object Number: 2092194  Size: SH
  13. Install the lower brake pad guide pin (1) through the brake caliper and over the edge of the brake pad spring.
  14. Ensure the brake pad guide pin is fully seated in the brake caliper housing.

  15. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation.
  16. With the engine OFF, gradually apply the brake pedal to approximately  2/3 of its travel distance.
  17. Slowly release the brake pedal.
  18. Wait 15 seconds, then repeat steps 10 and 11 until a firm brake pedal apply is obtained; this will properly seat the brake caliper pistons and brake pads.
  19. Fill the brake master cylinder reservoir to the proper level. Refer to Master Cylinder Reservoir Filling.
