    • J 28410 Gasket Remover
    • J 36660-A Torque Angle Meter

Removal Procedure

  1. Drain the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling in Engine Cooling.
  2. Remove the intake manifold flange. Refer to Intake Manifold Flange Replacement .
  3. Remove the water crossover. Refer to Engine Coolant Crossover Pipe Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  4. Important: Remove ONLY the exhaust camshaft if the cylinder head is NOT going to be replaced.

  5. Remove the right camshafts. Refer to Camshaft Replacement - Right Side .
  6. Remove the timing belt tensioner. Refer to Timing Belt Tensioner Replacement .

  7. Object Number: 345846  Size: SH
  8. Remove ONLY the 2 bolts securing the rear timing belt cover to the right cylinder head.
  9. Remove the right exhaust manifold. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Replacement - Right Side in Engine Exhaust.

  10. Object Number: 810246  Size: SH
  11. Remove the right cylinder head bolts (1 thru 8) in the sequence shown.
  12. Discard the cylinder head bolts.

  13. Remove the right cylinder head from the engine block.
  14. Place the cylinder head on a flat, clean surface with the combustion chambers face-up in order to prevent damage to the deck face.
  15. Important: DO NOT reuse the cylinder head gasket.

  16. Remove the right cylinder head gasket.
  17. Remove all remaining gasket material from the engine block using the J 28410 .
  18. Inspect the cylinder head gasket mating surface on the engine block.
  19. Clean and inspect the right cylinder head. Refer to Cylinder Head Cleaning and Inspection .
  20. Disassemble the right cylinder head if necessary. Refer to Cylinder Head Disassemble .

Installation Procedure

  1. Assemble the right cylinder head if necessary. Refer to Cylinder Head Assemble .

  2. Object Number: 159198  Size: SH
  3. Install the new right cylinder head gasket with OBEN/TOP imprint facing upward.
  4. Important: Ensure all wires, components, etc. are out of the way when installing the cylinder head.

  5. Position the cylinder head to the engine block.
  6. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

    Notice: Refer to Torque to Yield Bolts Notice in the Preface section.

  7. Install the new cylinder head bolts.
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the cylinder head bolts in sequence to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

  9. Following the tightening sequence use the J 36660-A to rotate the cylinder head bolts as described in the following steps:
  10. Tighten

    1. Rotate the cylinder head bolts 90 degrees.
    2. Rotate the cylinder head bolts an additional 90 degrees.
    3. Rotate the cylinder head bolts an additional 90 degrees.
    4. Rotate the cylinder head bolts an additional 15 degrees.
  11. Install the right exhaust manifold. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Replacement - Right Side in Engine Exhaust.

  12. Object Number: 345846  Size: SH
  13. Install the 2 bolts securing the rear timing belt cover to the right cylinder head.
  14. Tighten
    Tighten the rear timing belt cover bolts to 8 N·m (71 lb in).

  15. Install the timing belt tensioner. Refer to Timing Belt Tensioner Replacement .
  16. Install the right camshafts. Refer to Camshaft Replacement - Right Side .
  17. Install the water crossover. Refer to Engine Coolant Crossover Pipe Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  18. Install the intake manifold flange. Refer to Intake Manifold Flange Replacement .
  19. Fill the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling in Engine Cooling.
