Differential Case

    Caution: Refer to Safety Glasses Caution in the Preface section.


    Object Number: 777568  Size: SH
  1. Clean the differential case in solvent.
  2. Inspect the differential case for the following conditions:
  3. • Chips or cracks
    • Damage to the bolts holes (1)
    • Unusual wear, grooves or scoring
    • Damaged side bearing flanges (2)
    • Heat discoloration
    • Worn differential pin bores (3)

  4. Inspect the gears for the following conditions:
  5. • Pitting or heat discoloration
    • Unusual wear or scoring in the pinion gear pin bores (2)
    • Unusual wear, grooves or scoring on the differential pin (3)
    • Scored or worn side gear washers (5) and pinion gear washers (1)
    • Unusual wear or grooves on the axle side gear splines (4)

  6. Clean the pinion gear in solvent.
  7. Inspect the pinion gear for the following conditions:
  8. • Unusual gear teeth wear, pitting or heat discoloration (1)
    • Pinion splines for wear, pitting or twisted splines (2)
    • Pinion shaft thread condition (3)
    • Ensure pinion gear end is not bent or burred over on the end (4)

  9. Clean the ring gear in solvent.
  10. Inspect the ring gear for the following conditions:
  11. • Damage to the threaded holes (1)
    • Unusual wear or heat discoloration to the gear teeth (2)

  12. Clean the pinion flange in solvent.
  13. Inspect the pinion flange for the following conditions:
  14. • Splines for wear, pitting or twisting (1)
    • Sealing surface for grooves or pitting (2)

Bearings and Races


    Object Number: 1465  Size: SH
  1. Inspect the bearing rollers and races for the following conditions:
  2. • Pitting
    • Scoring or grooves
    • Excessive wear or other damage

    Object Number: 1458  Size: SH
  3. Inspect the bearing rollers and races for heat discoloration.
  4. Heat discoloration ranges from a faint yellow to a dark blue color. This discoloration may result from an overload or improper lubrication. Excessive heat causes softening of the rollers and races. Bearings or races with sign of heat discoloration must be replaced.
