Steering Gear Replacement LHD

Tools Required

    • J 24319-B Steering Linkage and Tie Rod Puller
    • J 42640 Steering Column Anti-Rotation Pin

Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 333146  Size: SH
  1. Install J 42640 to the steering column.
  2. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  3. Remove the front tires and wheels. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  4. Remove the front air deflector. Refer to Front Air Deflector Replacement in Body Front End.

  5. Object Number: 754897  Size: SH

    Caution: Failure to disconnect the intermediate shaft from the rack and pinion stub shaft can result in damage to the steering gear and/or intermediate shaft. This damage can cause loss of steering control which could result in personal injury.

    Notice: The wheels of the vehicle must be straight ahead and the steering column in the LOCK position before disconnecting the steering column or intermediate shaft from the steering gear. Failure to do so will cause the coil assembly in the steering column to become uncentered which will cause damage to the coil assembly.

  6. Remove the intermediate shaft lower pinch bolt.
  7. Disconnect the intermediate shaft from the power steering gear.

  9. Remove the outer tie rod retaining nuts.

  10. Object Number: 643351  Size: SH
  11. Using J 24319-B separate the outer tie rod from the steering knuckles.

  12. Object Number: 818791  Size: SH
  13. If equipped, disconnect the variable effort steering electrical connector (1) from the power steering gear.
  14. Remove the stabilizer shaft. Refer to Stabilizer Shaft Replacement in Front Suspension.
  15. Place a drain pan under the vehicle.

  17. Remove the power steering gear pressure and return hoses from the power steering gear.

  18. Object Number: 798341  Size: SH
  19. Remove the power steering pressure hose retaining bolt from the power steering gear.

  20. Object Number: 802792  Size: SH
  21. Remove the power steering gear mounting bolts.
  22. Remove the power steering gear through the left wheel opening.
  23. Transfer the outer tie rods if replacing the power steering gear.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the power steering gear through the left wheel opening.
  2. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.


    Object Number: 802792  Size: SH
  3. Install the power steering gear mounting bolts.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 95 N·m (70 lb ft).


    Object Number: 798341  Size: SH
  5. Install the power steering pressure hose to the steering gear retaining bolt.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 9 N·m (80 lb in).

  7. Install the stabilizer shaft. Refer to Stabilizer Shaft Replacement in Front Suspension.

  8. Object Number: 798334  Size: SH

    Important: Install new seals on the power steering pressure and return hoses.

  9. Install the power steering gear pressure and return hoses to the power steering gear.
  10. Tighten
    Tighten the hoses to 30 N·m (22 lb ft).


    Object Number: 818791  Size: SH
  11. If equipped, connect the variable effort steering electrical connector (1).

  12. Object Number: 794579  Size: SH
  13. Install the outer tie rod end to the steering knuckles.
  14. Install the outer tie rods nut.
  15. Tighten
    Tighten the nuts to 70 N·m (52 lb ft).


    Object Number: 754897  Size: SH
  16. Connect the intermediate shaft to the power steering gear.
  17. Install the intermediate shaft lower pinch bolt.
  18. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 47 N·m (35 lb ft).

  19. Install the front air deflector. Refer to Front Air Deflector Replacement in Body Front End.
  20. Install the tire and wheels. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  21. Lower the vehicle.

  22. Object Number: 333146  Size: SH
  23. Remove J 42640 from the steering column.
  24. Bleed the power steering system. Refer to Power Steering System Bleeding .
  25. Adjust the front toe. Refer to Front Toe Adjustment .

Steering Gear Replacement RHD

Tools Required

    • J 24319-B Steering Linkage and Tie Rod Puller
    • J 42640 Steering Column Anti-Rotation Pin

Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 333146  Size: SH
  1. Install J 42640 to the steering column.
  2. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  3. Remove the front tires and wheels. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  4. Remove the front air deflector. Refer to Front Air Deflector Replacement in Body Front End.

  11. Using J 24319-B separate the outer tie rod from the steering knuckles.

  12. Object Number: 818791  Size: SH
  13. If equipped, disconnect the variable effort steering electrical connector (1) from the power steering gear.
  14. Remove the stabilizer shaft. Refer to Stabilizer Shaft Replacement in Front Suspension.
  15. Place a drain pan under the vehicle.

  17. Remove the power steering gear pressure and return hoses from the power steering gear.

  18. Object Number: 827924  Size: SH
  19. Remove the power steering return hose retaining bolt from the power steering gear.

  20. Object Number: 802792  Size: SH
  21. Remove the power steering gear mounting bolts.
  22. Remove the power steering gear through the right wheel opening.
  23. Transfer the outer tie rods if replacing the power steering gear.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the power steering gear through the left wheel opening.
  2. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  3. Install the power steering gear mounting bolts.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the power steering gear mounting bolts to 95 N·m (70 lb ft).


    Object Number: 827924  Size: SH
  5. Install the power steering return hose to the steering gear retaining bolt.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 9 N·m (80 lb in).

  7. Install the stabilizer shaft. Refer to Stabilizer Shaft Replacement in Front Suspension.

  8. Object Number: 798336  Size: SH

    Important: Install new seals on the power steering pressure and return lines.

  9. Install the power steering gear pressure and return hoses to the power steering gear.
  10. Tighten
    Tighten the hoses to 30 N·m (22 lb ft).

  11. If equipped, connect the variable effort steering electrical connector (1).

  12. Object Number: 794579  Size: SH
  13. Install the outer tie rod end to the steering knuckles.
  14. Install the outer tie rods nuts.
  15. Tighten
    Tighten the nuts to 70 N·m (52 lb ft).

  16. Connect the intermediate shaft to the power steering gear.
  17. Install the intermediate shaft lower pinch bolt.
  18. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 47 N·m (35 lb ft).

  19. Install the front air deflector. Refer to Front Air Deflector Replacement in Body Front End.
  20. Install the tire and wheels. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  21. Lower the vehicle.

  23. Remove J 42640 from the steering column.
  24. Bleed the power steering system. Refer to Power Steering System Bleeding .
  25. Adjust the front toe. Refer to Front Toe Adjustment .
