Did you perform the Lighting Systems Diagnostic System Check?

Go to Step 2

Go to Diagnostic System Check - Lighting Systems

1. Press and release the brake pedal.
2. Observe the stop lamps.

Do the stop lamps operate properly?

Go to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections in Wiring Systems

Go to Step 3

Are all the stop lamps inoperative?

Go to Step 5

Go to Step 4

Is only the high mount stop lamp inoperative?

Go to Step 7

Go to Step 9

Connect a test lamp between the voltage supply circuit of the stop lamp switch and a good ground.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Go to Step 6

Go to Step 14

1. Connect a test lamp between the stop lamp signal circuit of the stop lamp switch and a good ground.
2. Press and release the brake pedal several times.

Does the test lamp turn ON and OFF with the brake pedal?

Go to Step 15

Go to Step 11

1. Connect a test lamp between the stop lamp switch signal circuit of the high mount stop lamp and a good ground
2. Press and release the brake pedal several times.

Does the test lamp turn ON and OFF with the brake pedal?

Go to Step 8

1. Connect a test lamp between the stop lamp switch signal circuit of the high mount stop lamp and the ground circuit of the high mount stop lamp.
2. Press and release the brake pedal several times.

Does the test lamp turn ON and OFF with the brake pedal?

1. Connect a test lamp between the stop lamp switch signal circuit at the connector of the suspect stop lamp and a good ground.
2. Press and release the brake pedal several times.

Does the test lamp turn ON and OFF with the brake pedal?

1. Connect a test lamp between the stop lamp switch signal circuit and the stop lamp ground circuit at the connector of the suspect stop lamp.
2. Press and release the brake pedal several times.

Does the test lamp turn ON and OFF with the brake pedal?

Inspect for poor connections at the harness connector of the stop lamp switch. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Did you find and correct the condition?

Go to Step 20

Inspect for poor connections at the harness connector of the high mount stop lamp. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Inspect for poor connections at the harness connector of the appropriate stop lamp. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Repair an open or high resistance in the voltage supply circuit of the stop lamp switch. Refer to Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Repair an open or high resistance in the stop lamp switch signal circuit. Refer to Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Did you complete repair?

Repair an open or high resistance in the ground circuit of the appropriate stop lamp. Refer to Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Replace the stop lamp switch. Refer to Stop Lamp Switch Replacement .

Replace the high mount stoplamp. Refer to High Mount Stop Lamp Replacement .

Replace the appropriate stop lamp. Refer to Tail Lamp Replacement .
