Caution: Brake fluid may irritate eyes and skin. In case of contact, take the following actions:

   • Eye contact - rinse thoroughly with water.
   • Skin contact - rinse with soap and water.
   • If ingested - consult a physician immediately.

Caution: Certain components in the Antilock Brake System are not intended to be serviced individually. Attempting to remove or disconnect certain system components may result in personal injury and/or improper system operation. Only those components with approved removal and installation procedures in Antilock Brakes or Antilock Brakes (ABS) with Traction Control System (TCS) should be serviced.

Notice: Observe the following general precautions when servicing the Antilock Brake System and/or other vehicle systems. Failure to observe these precautions may result in Antilock Brake System damage.

   • Unplug the EBCM/EBTCM harness connector before performing electric welding procedures.
   • Always and carefully note the routing, position, mounting and location of the ABS and/or TCS wiring, connectors, clips, brackets, etc. The ABS and/or TCS components are extremely sensitive to Electromagnetic Interference (EMI). Proper mounting is critical when servicing ABS/TCS components.
   • Do not use a quick charger for engine starting if the battery is still connected to the vehicle's electrical system. Do not use a quick charger for battery charging if the battery is still connected to the vehicle's electrical system. Failure to observe this precaution may cause serious damage to electrical components. Always disconnect the battery negative cable when charging a battery.
   • Never disconnect the battery from the electrical system with the engine running.
   • The ignition switch must be in the OFF position when disconnecting the EBCM/EBTCM connector.
   • Do not hang the suspension components by the wheel speed sensor cable. Cable damage may result.
   • Do not force the wheel speed sensors into place. Push the sensors into place by hand only.
   • During painting work, the EBTCM may be subjected to a maximum temperature of 95°C (203°F) for brief periods and a maximum of 85°C (184°F) for lengthy periods (about two hours).
   • Many components of the ABS/TCS are non-serviceable and must be replaced as assemblies. Do not disassemble any component which is designated as non-serviceable in this section.
   • Use only Delco Supreme 11 (GM 1052542) brake fluid or equivalent DOT 3 brake fluid when filling the master cylinder. Do not use a container which has been used for petroleum based fluid. Do not use a container which is wet with water. Petroleum based fluids will cause swelling and distortion of rubber parts in the hydraulic brake system and water will mix with brake fluid, lowering the fluid boiling point. Keep all fluid containers capped to prevent contamination.
   • Use a scan tool diagnostic tester to check the entire ABS/TCS system after the following replacement:
   • Check the entire ABS/TCS system after the replacement of the Brake Pressure Modulator Valve (BPMV).
   • Check the entire ABS/TCS system after the replacement of the EBCM/EBTCM.
   • Check the entire ABS/TCS system after the replacement of the wheel speed sensors.
   • Check the entire ABS/TCS system after the replacement of the wiring harness.
   • Check the entire ABS/TCS system after work involving the ABS/TCS system.
The above precautions are not exhaustive and are to be followed when working on an ABS/TCS equipped vehicle. Become familiar with the ABS/TCS and how it may be interrelated to other components on the vehicle when performing service work.

Important: 

   • Replace all components included in repair kits used to service this system.
   • Lubricate rubber parts with clean brake fluid to make assembly easier.
   • It may be necessary to bleed all or part of the brake system if any hydraulic component is removed or disconnected. The torque values specified are for dry, unlubricated fasteners.
   • Perform service operations on a clean bench, free from all mineral oil materials.
   • Use of tire sizes other than those recommended may result in a reduction in the optimal performance of the antilock brake or traction control systems.
