Composition Plates

    • Dry the plates.
    • Inspect the plates for the following conditions:
       - flaking
       - wear
       - glazing
       - cracking
       - charring
       - any chips or any metal particles that are embedded in the lining
    • Replace the composition plate if any of the above conditions are present.

Steel Plates

Important: Replace the springs if there is evidence of extreme heat or burning in the area of the clutch.

Wipe the plates dry. Check the plates for any heat discoloration. Reuse the plate if the surfaces are smooth or if the color smear is present. Replace the plate if a severe heat spot discoloration or a surface scuffing is present.

Causes of Burned Clutch Plates

Burned clutch plates can be caused by the following conditions:

    • An incorrect usage of clutch plates
    • Engine coolant in the transmission fluild
    • A cracked piston
    • Damaged or missing seals
    • Low line pressure
    • A warped valve body face, or porosity between channels
    • Improperly installed valve bushing clips
    • Misplaced checks balls
    • Worn or damaged Teflon (rotating) seal rings
