THE 1997 CATERA USES A SINGLE KEY SYSTEM (ONE KEY WILL OPEN THE DOOR, IGNITION AND GLOVEBOX), THAT CONTAINS AN ANTI-THEFT TRANSPONDER CHIP IN THE KEY HEAD. THE KEY IS AN "S" BLANK AND IS DUAL SIDED WITH 10 CUTTING POSITIONS AND 4 DEPTHS OF CUT. DUE TO THE SIZE OF THE KEY HEAD, CATERA KEYS MAY NOT FIT INTO SOME MANUAL KEYCUTTING EQUIPMENT FROM ILCO/UNICAN AND CURTIS (AUTOMATED EQUIPMENT DOES NOT EXHIBIT AN INTERFERENCE CONDITION). ONCE CUT, NEW CATERA KEYS MUST BE ELECTRONICALLY CODED TO THE CAR USING A TECH 2. INSTRUCTIONS FOR THIS AND OTHER IMPORTANT CATERA KEY CUTTING INFORMATION IS OUTLINED BELOW.
CATERA MANUAL KEYCUTTING EQUIPMENT
* ILCO / UNICAN - THE ILCO/UNICAN EXACTA MK1 EQUIPMENT CAN BE MODIFIED BY GRINDING A SMALL NOTCH IN THE BASE (AS SHOWN IN FIGURE 1) SO THAT THE KEY WILL SIT SQUARELY IN THE CUTTER. CALL THE MANUFACTURER AT 1-800-334-1381, EXTENTION 281, OR 1-800-GM-TOOLS TO ORDER AN ACCESSORY KIT WHICH CONSISTS OF:
SPACING PLATE 241 DEPTH KNOB OM INSERT 149 PUNCH + DIE 5
* CURTIS - CURTIS HAS A NEW VERSION OF THEIR HAND HELD CODE CUTTER AVAILABLE FOR CATERA KEYS. YOU MAY CONTACT CURTIS AT 1-800-555-2878, OR SEE YOUR LOCAL CURTIS REPRESENTATIVE.
ORDERING KEY BLANKS
SPARE KEY BLANKS ARE INCLUDED IN THE INITIAL STOCK ORDER FOR THE CATERA. IF ADDITIONAL KEY BLANKS ARE REQUIRED, THEY SHOULD BE ORDERED THROUGH GMSPO.
KEY CODE AND SECURITY CODE LOCATION
THE KEY CODE AND SECURITY CODE ARE PRINTED ON THE "CAR PASS" IN THE GLOVEBOX. THIS INFORMATION SHOULD BE GIVEN TO THE OWNER AND A COPY SHOULD BE MAINTAINED ON FILE AT THE DEALERSHIP. BOTH THE KEY CODE AND SECURITY CODE WILL BE REQUIRED IF A NEW KEY MUST BE CUT. THIS INFORMATION IS ALSO AVAILABLE THROUGH THE GMSPO TRACS 2000 (1-800- 433-6961) SYSTEM AND CADILLAC ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE.
CODING A KEY TO THE CAR
ONCE A KEY HAS BEEN CUT, IT MUST BE CODED TO THE ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM (IMMOBILIZER SYSTEM) USING A TECH 2. TO ENCODE A CATERA KEY, USE THE FOLLOWING PROCEDURE:
* FIRST, OBTAIN THE KEY CODE AND SECURITY CODE FROM SALES DELIVERY INFORMATION.
* NEXT, REFER TO THE KEY CODE BOOK TO DETERMINE THE PROPER KEY CUT FOR THE VEHICLE.
* USING THE KEY CUTTING EQUIPMENT, CUT THE NEW KEY. MAKE SURE THE KEY IS FREE OF BURRS BEFORE INSERTING IT IN THE KEY CYLINDER.
* USING THE TECH 2, ENCODE THE NEW KEY TO THE VEHICLE'S IMMOBILIZER SYSTEM. A MAXIMUM OF FIVE KEYS CAN BE ENCODED TO A VEHICLE.
* START THE VEHICLE. IF IT STARTS AND STALLS WITHIN 1.5 SECONDS, REPEAT THE ENCODING PROCEDURE AND START THE VEHICLE. IF FURTHUR DIFFICULTY IS ENCOUNTERED, REFER TO SECTION 8A-133 IN THE 1997 CATERA SERVICE INFORMATION MANUAL.

GENERAL MOTORS BULLETINS ARE INTENDED FOR USE BY PROFESSIONAL TECHNICIANS, NOT A "DO-IT-YOURSELFER". THEY ARE WRITTEN TO INFORM THOSE TECHNICIANS OF CONDITIONS THAT MAY OCCUR ON SOME VEHICLES, OR TO PROVIDE INFORMATION THAT COULD ASSIST IN THE PROPER SERVICE OF A VEHICLE. PROPERLY TRAINED TECHNICIANS HAVE THE EQUIPMENT, TOOLS, SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS AND KNOW-HOW TO DO A JOB PROPERLY AND SAFELY. IF A CONDITION IS DESCRIBED, DO NOT ASSUME THAT THE BULLETIN APPLIES TO YOUR VEHICLE, OR THAT YOUR VEHICLE WILL HAVE THAT CONDITION. SEE A GENERAL MOTORS DEALER SERVICING YOUR BRAND OF GENERAL MOTORS VEHICLE FOR INFORMATION ON WHETHER YOUR VEHICLE MAY BENEFIT FROM THE INFORMATION.
