A 2ND DESIGN CUPHOLDER, HAS BEEN IMPLEMENTED ON 1997 CATERA VEHICLES STARTING WITH VIN VR945415. THIS NEW CUPHOLDER OFFERS INCREASED STRENGTH AND RESISTANCE TO BREAKAGE. A 2ND DESIGN INNER CONSOLE LID AND STRIKER WERE ALSO IMPLEMENTED TO ACCOMMODATE THE INCREASED THICKNESS OF THE CUPHOLDER ARMS. THE 2ND DESIGN CUPHOLDER IS THE ONLY SERVICE PART AVAILABLE AND MUST BE USED TO SERVICE CARS PRIOR TO THE BREAKPOINT. HOWEVER, WHEN INSTALLING A 2ND DESIGN CUPHOLDER ON AN EARLY CAR, THE CONSOLE LID INNER COVER AND THE CONSOLE LID STRIKER MUST BE REPLACED WITH 2ND DESIGN PARTS TO AVOID CREATING A RATTLE NOISE. THE PROCEDURE FOR INSTALLING 2ND DESIGN PARTS ON A EARLY CAR IS AS FOLLOWS. (REFER TO FIGURE 1).
1. REMOVE THE CUPHOLDER.
2. REMOVE THE CONSOLE BOX AND LID ASSEMBLY FROM THE CONSOLE BY REMOVING THE FOUR RETAINING SCREWS.
3. REMOVE THE CONSOLE LID STRIKER BY REMOVING THE TWO RETAINING SCREWS AND INSTALL 2ND DESIGN STRIKER USING THE EXISTING SCREWS.
4. REMOVE THE INNER COVER FROM THE CONSOLE LID BY REMOVING THE FOUR RETAINING SCREWS AND INSTALL 2ND DESIGN INNER COVER USING THE EXISTING SCREWS.
5. REINSTALL THE CONSOLE BOX AND LID ASSEMBLY IN THE CONSOLE USING THE EXISTING SCREWS.
