When the ignition is turned ON, the inflatable restraint sensing and diagnostic (SDM) performs continuous diagnostic tests to check for proper circuit continuity and for shorts to ground or voltage. During one portion of these tests, the SDM checks to ensure that it is properly configured for this vehicle. If a malfunction is detected, the SDM will store a diagnostic trouble code (DTC).
Ignition 1 voltage is within the normal operating voltage range.
The SDM is not properly configured for this vehicle.
The SDM turns the AIR BAG indicator ON.
You can use the scan tool to properly configure the SDM. Once the SDM is properly configured, the DTC will clear.
DTC 53 indicates that the SDM is not configured for use in this vehicle.
