Some early 1982 Cimarrons built before Broadcast Number 400464 may exhibit a condition where the retainers holding the upper console to the lower console have pulled loose resulting in the loss in rigidity of the console. To correct cars exhibiting this condition, replace the original plastic push-in type nuts with "J" nuts, Part No. 11504531, by performing the following procedure:
1. Remove ashtray trim plate by removing four screws. (See drawing).
2. Remove four screws securing shift lever trim plate. Disconnect wiring from trim plate and remove plate.
3. Remove two screws holding upper and lower sections of the front floor console together. Lift off the upper section of front floor console.
4. Remove two push-in type nuts from bracket in lower section of console.
5. Place upper section of front floor console back in position and align holes in the upper and lower brackets.
6. Position replacement "J" nut underneath lower bracket and reinstall screw. Repeat for the other hole in the brackets. Do not clip the "J" nut to the bracket. The holes in the brackets are elongated to provide sliding action for a good fit of the upper and lower sections of the console.
7. Reinstall shift lever trim plate.
8. Reinstall ashtray trim plate.
For warranty purposes, use Operation No. T6046, Console Retainer Replacement, at 0.3 hour.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
