GROUP 6E - ENGINE EMISSIONS MULTIPLE SUBJECTS/MISC. ITEMS

THIS BULLETIN CONTAINS MULTIPLE SUBJECT MATTER. PLEASE PAGE THROUGH UNTIL DESIRED SUBJECT IS REACHED.

GROUP 6E-ENGINE EMISSIONS - MISCELLANEOUS ITEMS

1. OXYGEN SENSOR SHIELD REPLACEMENT 1982 CIMARRON

EACH TIME AN OXYGEN SENSOR IS REMOVED FROM A CIMARRON EQUIPPED WITH A 1.8L ENGINE, THE EXISTING EXHAUST OXYGEN SENSOR SHIELD MUST BE DIS- CARDED AND REPLACED WITH NEW PART NO. 14058729. FAILURE TO REPLACE THIS SHIELD MAY CAUSE AN AIR LEAK PAST THE OXYGEN SENSOR. A LEAK WILL RESULT IN AN ERRONEOUS INDICATION OF A LEAN EXHAUST AND MAY CAUSE A CODE 44 AND/ OR RICH ENGINE OPERATION.

2. EXHAUST GAS RECIRCULATION (EGR) MAINTENANCE NOTICE

THIS NOTICE APPLIES TO ALL VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH AN EGR VALVE. THE NOTICE ON PAGE 6E-45 OF THE 1982 CIMARRON SERVICE INFORMATION MANUAL IS INCORRECT AND SHOULD BE CHANGED AS SHOWN:

EGR VALVE CLEANING

NOTICE: DO NOT WASH VALVE ASSEMBLY IN SOLVENTS OR DEGREASER - PERMANENT DAMAGE TO VALVE DIAPHRAGM MAY RESULT. ALSO, SAND BLASTING OF THE VALVE IS NOT RECOMMENDED SINCE THIS CAN AFFECT THE OPERATION OF THE VALVE.

3. CODE 24 ON CIMARRONS EQUIPPED WITH 1.8L ENGINE AND MANUAL TRANSMISSIONS

A CIMARRON EQUIPPED WITH A MANUAL TRANSAXLE MAY ILLUMINATE THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT AND SET A CODE 24 AFTER A COLD START BEFORE THE CAR IS DRIVEN AWAY. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WILL TURN OFF ONCE THE CAR IS DRIVEN PROVIDED THE SPEED SENSOR INPUT IS CORRECT.

THE DIAGNOSTIC ROUTINE IN THE ECM COMPARES TPS ANGLE TO VEHICLE SPEED WHEN THE PARK NEUTRAL INPUT DOES NOT INDICATE PARK OR NEUTRAL. SINCE A MANUAL TRANSAXLE CIMARRON HAS A CLUTCH PEDAL SWITCH RATHER THAN A PARK NEUTRAL SWITCH, A CAR IDLING AT A FAST IDLE IN NEUTRAL WITH THE CLUTCH ENGAGED (PEDAL RELEASED) CAN SET A CODE 24 SINCE THE VEHICLE SPEED IS ZERO.

VEHICLE PERFORMANCE WILL NOT BE AFFECTED BY THIS CONDITION. IF CARB- URETOR, ISC, AND TPS ADJUSTMENTS ARE CORRECT, THIS CONDITION SHOULD BE CONSIDERED NORMAL.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
