Some 1983 Cimarrons may experience a clunking noise when reversing steering direction. This condition may be caused by excessive piston ring to ring land side clearance of the piston and rod assembly.
To verify this condition, upon disassembly of the gear mechanism, if a .010" feeler guage can be placed at any point between the piston and piston ring, this is evidence of excessive clearance, Figure 1.
Replacement of the piston rod assembly and piston ring are necessary to eliminate this condition.
For warranty purposes, use Operation No. E9720 at 2.8 hours (automatic) or 2.7 hours (manual).
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
