Some 1983-1984 Cimarrons equipped with a 2.0L engine may develop coolant loss due to a cracked cylinder head. The crack may develop across the #6 intake valve spring seat area and continues across and behind the #4 and #5 exhaust valve spring seats, see Figure 1. It may be necessary to use a dye check to locate the crack.
Castings manufactured after Julian code date D-12-4 have a revised casting. The Julian date code is located behind the number 2 and 3 valve spring seats, see Figure 2. All service stock is of the revised casting. The part number for the 2.0L cylinder head is 14033265.
For warranty purposes, use labor Operation No. J0518 at 7.1 hours to replace the cylinder head.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
