SERVICE CASE WITH MISSING PLUGS - THM 125C

THM 125C transaxle service cases (P/N 8631974) obtained through GMWDD to service 1982 and 1983 Cimarrons may have been assembled without one or more of the necessary cup and pipe plugs.

The following symptoms would be exhibited based upon which plug(s) were missing from the service case assembly:

Plug Name Condition

Parking pawl shaft and/or External leak at rear, right side governor pressure of transaxle.

3rd oil No third gear operation (1st, 2nd and reverse normal).

Case servo No second gear operation (1st and reverse normal, 3rd available only with "let-up" shift above 25 MPH).

Before using a GMWDD supplied 125C transaxle service case, inspect for the presence of the above mentioned plugs (refer to Figures 1, 2 and 3). If it is determined that the cup plug(s) and/or pipe plug are missing, proceed as follows:

1. Install the governor pressure pipe plug (P/N 444613) and torque to 11 N.m (8 ft. lbs.) (refer to Figure 1).

2. Coat the parking pawl shaft cup plug (P/N 8631016) with Loctite 240 or equivalent and install using a 9.5mm (3/8") punch (refer to Figure 1).

3. Install the servo orifice cup plug (P/N 8628864) using a 6mm (1/4") punch. Stake the O.D. of the cup plug to prevent the plug from working its way out (refer to Figure 2).

4. Install the 3rd oil cup plug (P/N 8611710) using a 6mm (1/4") punch until it seats in the bore. The plug must be below the case face surface (refer to Figure 3).

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
