Starting in late March or early April, all Cimarrons will be built using the DA-6 A/C compressor. This compressor is a six-cylinder axial design very similar in principle to the previously used Delco Air axial-6 compressor. The design is simplified, however, and uses aluminum die-castings instead of iron castings, including an integral die-cast aluminum shell. The DA-6 has the distinct advantage of being smaller and lighter in weight (12.6 lbs. vs 17.8 lbs.) than the R4 A/C compressor currently used on Cimarrons. Also, a simpler bracket design is used to mount the DA-6 compressor to the engine. The fourth revision to the 1983 Service Information Manual is devoted to new information concerning this compressor, including information on Refrigerant Oil Distribution and Compressor Overhaul procedures.
Currently, GMPST offers a one-day class (Course No. 11004.01) combining the R4, A6 and DA-6 A/C compressors. Dealers should make sure their Service Department is properly trained to service these new compressors.
Special tools for the DA-6 were shipped February 15, 1983, to all Business Management Dealers at a cost of $l88.85. Please notify the zone in the event these tools were not received.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
