FLUID DAMAGE TO PAINT UPON NEW CAR DELIVERY

LAST YEAR A TASK FORCE WAS APPOINTED AT CADILLAC TO THOROUGHLY REVIEW AND IDENTIFY CAUSES OF FLUID DAMAGE TO NEW VEHICLES IN TRANSIT. AS A RESULT OF THIS REVIEW, ALL IN PLANT FLUID FILL STATION PROCEDURES WERE STUDIED AND REVISED WHERE REQUIRED TO EITHER ELIMINATE OR MINIMIZE SPILLAGE.

WHILE WE ARE CONFIDENT THAT THIS PROJECT HAS SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCED FLUID SPILLAGE, DAMAGE TO PAINTED SURFACES CAN BE FURTHER REDUCED OR ELIMINATED COMPLETELY IF DEALERS WILL TAKE THE SIMPLE PRECAUTIONALY MEASURE OF IMMEDIATELY WASHING OFF THE VEHICLE UPON RECEIPT OR AT LEAST WIPING OFF ANY AREAS WHERE SPILLAGE IS EVIDENT.

THE ONLY FLUIDS WHICH CAUSE IMMEDIATE DAMAGE TO PAINT ON CONTACT ARE BRAKE FLUID AND BATTERY ACID. ALL OTHER FLUIDS WILL NOT CAUSE DAMAGE IF WASHED OFF WITHIN A REASONABLE PERIOD OF TIME. PROLONGED CONTACT WILL CAUSE PAINT DISCOLORATION AND SURFACE DAMAGE.

IF FLUIDS ARE NOTED ON NEW VEHICLES RECEIVED FROM THE CARRIER, IT SHOULD NOT BE NOTED ON THE DELIVERY RECEIPT IF NO PAINT DAMAGE IS EVIDENT AFTER WASHING THE CAR OR WIPING OFF THE SUSPECT AREA WITH A DAMP CLOTH. ONLY PERMANENT PAINT DAMAGE SHOULD BE SO NOTED, IDENTIFYING THE TYPE OF FLUID WHERE POSSIBLE.

FOLLOWING THESE PROCEDURES WILL ELIMINATE UNNECESSARY PAINT REPAIRS IN ALMOST ALL INSTANCES.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
