NO REVERSE OR NEUTRAL TO REVERSE DELAY ENGAGEMENT

Some 1982 and 1983 Cimarrons equipped with THM125C transaxles may experience no reverse operation and/or neutral to reverse delayed engagement conditions. These conditions have separate causes which are both associated with the low and reverse clutch assembly. This bulletin outlines the production changes and service procedures to correct these conditions.

The no reverse condition may be caused by separation of the lip seal retainer (shaded area in circle of Figures 1 and 2) from the low and reverse piston. The condition of neutral to reverse delayed engagement may be caused by a low and reverse piston that applies too slowly. The new design lip seal retainer and oil displacement insert (Figure 3) were implemented into production in March, 1983 to respectively correct the no reverse and delayed engagement conditions.

Use the following chart for service correction based on the condition(s) as well as type of low and reverse clutch assembly:

Low and Reverse Condition(s) Clutch Assembly Correction ------------ --------------- ----------- No Reverse and/or Replace the low and reverse Neutral to Reverse First Design clutch assembly with Service delayed engagement (Figure 1) Package #8653915. Also add the oil displacement insert (part number 8643490).

No Reverse Second Design Replace the second design (Figure 2) low and reverse piston with a third design low and reverse piston (part no. 8653916).

Neutral to Reverse Second Design Add the oil displacement delayed engagement (Figure 2) insert (part no. 8643490) to the low and reverse clutch assembly.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
