POWER STRG. RACK & PINION SHORT GEAR SERV. P/N'S

MODELS AFFECTED: 1982-1987 CIMARRON

Beginning in the 1987 model year, Cimarrron models were equipped with an improved steering gear design using a single cylinder tube configuration. 1987 style center-take-off rack and pinion "short gear" assemblies will now be used for service of most 1982 through 1987 Cimarrons, replacing the previous double wall cylinder configuration. See the application chart below for the correct GMSPO part numbers to be used when ordering replacement "short gear" assemblies.

When installing the 1987 style gear on past model vehicles, a new flexible coupling, RH mounting grommet and line retainer must be installed. As a result, past model "short gear" assemblies will include the following parts in the service kit:

- One (1) 26000412 coupling assembly - One (1) 26001492 RH mounting grommet - One (1) 22823112 line retainer - An instruction sheet

When servicing a 1987 style "short gear" assembly, refer to the 1987 Cimarron Service Information Manual, Section 3B1, for service procedures.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
