POWER STEERING PUMP O-RING CHANGE

MODELS AFFECTED: 1982-1985 DEVILLE BROUGHAM, ELDORADO AND SEVILLE EQUIPPED WITH 5.7L DIESEL ENGINE 1980-1984 LIMOUSINE AND COMMERCIAL CHASSIS 1980-1981 DEVILLE, BROUGHAM, ELDORADO AND SEVILLE

A new style power steering pump housing is currently being used in production on 1985 diesel equipped Broughams, Eldorados and Sevilles and stocked in GMWDD inventory (P/N 7830236) for servicing all submerged style pumps on the models listed above.

This new style housing requires that new-style O-ring seals be used at the pressure line fitting and reservoir mounting bolt holes, which are approximately twice as thick as the old-style seals. Pump housings requiring the new O-ring configuration may be distinguished by inspection of the housing mounting pad as shown in Figure 1. Pump housings marked with an "X" on the mounting pad use the new thicker O-ring seals.

The following information should be noted when servicing power steering pumps on affected vehicles:

New-style O-ring seals are not compatible with old-style pump housings, nor are old-style seals compatible with new-style housings.

GMWDD seal kit P/N 7848522 includes both old and new-style O-ring seals.

New reservoir kits also include both old and new-style O-ring seals and are compatible with old and new-style housing assemblies.

Reservoir and seal kits will include an instruction sheet describing seal applications and the method of identifying the new housing.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
