HARSH ENGAGEMENT NEUTRAL TO DRIVE OR REVERSE

MODELS AFFECTED: 1985-1987 CIMARRONS

This Bulletin supersedes Bulletin T-86-71, Group 7, which should be destroyed.

Some 1985-1987 Cimarrons may exhibit a harsh neutral-to-drive and/or harsh neutral-to-reverse engagement. A revised feed/bleed system has been implemented in production for improved garage shift feel.

To repair a condition of harsh neutral-to-drive engagement on transaxles built before July 3, 1986 (Julian Date 184), replace the forward clutch with the second design assembly listed below.

Part Number Description ---------- ----------- 8664167 Forward Clutch Assembly (Includes: Housing, Piston, New Selective Backing Plate, and an additional Wave Plate.)

To repair a neutral-to-reverse engagement condition on vehicles built before July 8, 1986 (Julian date 189), replace the lo-reverse housing and clutch pack assembly listed below.

Part Number Description ----------- ----------- 8664152 Lo-Reverse Clutch Housing Assembly

8664151 Lo-Reverse Clutch Pack Assembly (Includes: Both Wave Plates, Steel and Composition-Faced Plates and the correct selective Backing Plate).

When servicing a 125C transaxle of the second design (after Julian Date 189), it is important to select the correct backing plate for the forward clutch. Backing plate selection effects piston travel and shift feel. To select the backing plate, assemble the clutch using the original backing plate. Apply approximately 10 lbs. of pressure to the backing plate. This will assure full contact of all the pack elements without compressing the wave plates. Use a feeler gauge to check the clearance between the snap ring and the backing plate. If the clearance is more than 1.49mm (.060"), use the next thicker backing plate. If the clearance is less than 0.67mm (.004") use the next thinner plate. Backing plate selection can be made from the chart found in the unit overhaul section of the Service Information Manual.

The second design lo-reverse clutch pack is serviced as an assembly only. To insure proper clutch pack clearance, the second design assembly includes a pre-selected backing plate.

For warranty purposes, use Labor Operations K7200 at 6.6 hours for the forward clutch (plus any applicable ADD time) or K7580 at 7.2 hours for replacement of the lo-reverse clutch and the forward clutch (plus any applicable ADD time).

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
