SERVICE AMNUAL UPDATE SERPENTINE BELT ADJUSTMENT

SERVICE MANUAL UPDATE- SERPENTINE BELT TENSION, ADJUSTMENT SPECIFICATIONS

VEHICLES AFFECTED: 1985-1986 J WITH THE 2.8L V6 ENGINE ------------------ (VIN CODE W)

Section 0A, General Information of the 1985 and 1986 Volume I Chassis Service Manuals contain a belt tension chart (Figure 25 in the 1985 Chassis Service Manual; Figure 22 in the 1986 Chassis Service Manual). These charts contain incorrect information on the 2.8L V6 (VIN Code W) engine used in the J carline. The belt tension. specifications in these charts should be disregarded except for the specifications given for the air conditioning compressor drive belt.

The correct serpentine belt tensioning procedure and specifications can be found in the 1986 Volume I Chassis Service Manual (Firenza, Calais, Cutlass Ciera, Delta 88 and Ninety-Eight) 2.8L V6 VIN W and engine section on page 8.

The 1985 and 1986 2.8L (VIN Code W) engine installed in the J carline uses a manually adjusted serpentine drive belt to drive the water pump, power steering pump and generator.

Please mark a reference to this article in the appropriate 1985 and 1986 Volume I Chassis Service Manuals, at the belt tension charts.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
