Some 'J' cars built in 1985 and early 1986 and equipped with 2.8L V-6 engines may experience an after-boil condition.
This condition may occur after the vehicle has been driven under heavy engine load conditions (such as driving up a steep hill), and is immediately turned off before the engine has returned to normal operating temperatures. After shutting the engine off, a gurgling sound may be heard due to coolant expansion which may cause the coolant reservoir to overflow.
To correct this condition, a new coolalt reservoir (P/N 14093493) has been released for production and service use. This reservoir has an additional 568 ml (20 ounce) capacity and may be installed in vehicles equipped with a 2.8L V-6 engine. Two replacement clamps (P/N 477402) are required; however, both hoses may be reused.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
