Some early 1988 Cimarrons equipped with a manual 5 speed transaxle (HM-282) may experience a fluid leak at the level indicator assembly (Figure 1).
This condition is caused by inadequate sealing of the plug to the case bore where the finish is too smooth for effective retention. This may allow the plug to move "up" and out of the bore when the cam lock is actuated.
To repair this condition, test retention by trying to pull out the indicator (with the cam-lock on). If the indicator pulls out, install the updated design fluid level indicator assembly, P/N 22540197.
The updated design has four grooves on die plug to help "grab" the bore. The updated design also has an expanded "OK" fluid level section that is crosshatched (Figure 2). For warranty purposes, use Labor Operation K2025 for .3 hour.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
