SOME OWNERS MAY COMMENT ON A RATTLE IN THE ASHTRAY AREA.
THIS CONDITION MAY BE CAUSED BY ONE OF THE FOLLOWING:
1. EXCESSIVE CLEARANCE BETWEEN ASHTRAY GUIDE TRACKS. 2. SPRING STOP RATTLING AGAINST TRACK BRACKET. 3. ASHTRAY RECEIVER LOOSE. 4. INSTRUMENT PANEL (I/P) "H" BRACKET INTERFERENCE.
THE FOLLOWING SERVICE PROCEDURE HAS BEEN DEVELOPED TO CORRECT THIS CONDITION:
1. REMOVE FOUR FASTENERS RETAINING ASHTRAY ASSEMBLY TO I/P.
2. REMOVE ASHTRAY ASSEMBLY FROM I/P.
3. CHECK FOR EXCESSIVE PLAY BETWEEN THE ASHTRAY GUIDES AND TRACKS (FIGURE 1).
- CLEARANCE SHOULD BE CHECKED IN BOTH THE FULL OPEN AND FULL CLOSED POSITION.
- TO REDUCE CLEARANCE, USE A PAIR OF PLIERS TO SQUEEZE BOTH ENDS OF BOTH TRACKS (FOUR LOCATIONS). BE CAREFUL NOT TO SQUEEZE TOO TIGHT, OR OPENING AND CLOSING EFFORTS WILL INCREASE TOO MUCH.
4. ADD LOOP MATERIAL FROM A HOOK AND LOOP TYPE FASTENER TO AREAS WHERE THE ASHTRAY SPRING STOP CONTACTS THE ASHTRAY TRACK BRACKET.
- FIGURE 2 SHOWS THE AREA THE SPRING STOP CONTACTS THE ASHTRAY TRACK ASSEMBLY IN THE CLOSED POSITION. THE AREA IT CONTACTS IN THE OPEN POSITION IS HIDDEN FROM VIEW. LOOP MATERIAL SHOULD BE ADDED TO BOTH LOCATIONS.
5. TO ENSURE THE ASHTRAY RECEIVER IS TIGHT, REMOVE THE RECEIVER AND BEND THE RETENTION TABS OUTWARD (FIGURE 3).
6. INSTALL THE ASHTRAY RECEIVER AND CHECK FOR EXCESSIVE MOVEMENT.
7. BEND THE FLANGE ON THE I/P "H" BRACKET FLAT IN TWO LOCATIONS USING A PAIR OF LOCKING PLIERS (FIGURE 4).
- ENSURE THE "H" BRACKET FLANGE IS NOT CONTACTING ANY PART OF THE I/P LOWER SHEET METAL.
8. INSTALL ASHTRAY ASSEMBLY TO I/P.
