SOME ENGINES MAY EXHIBIT ENGINE OIL LEAKS ALONG THE UPPER TO LOWER CRANKCASE JOINT.
THIS CONDITION MAY BE CAUSED BY SCRATCHES, NICKS AND IMPERFECTIONS IN THE UPPER AND/OR LOWER CRANKCASES.
TO CORRECT OIL LEAKS IN THESE AREAS, USE THE FOLLOWING PROCEDURE:
1. DISASSEMBLE ENGINE AS NECESSARY USING SERVICE MANUAL PROCEDURES TO REPLACE UPPER TO LOWER CRANKCASE SEAL.
2. THOROUGHLY CLEAN THE ENTIRE UPPER AND LOWER CRANKCASE SEAL JOINT WITH BRAKE CLEANER OR SUITABLE EQUIVALENT CLEANER.
3. THOROUGHLY AIR DRY THE ENTIRE UPPER AND LOWER CRANKCASE SEAL JOINT WITH SHOP AIR (20 PSIG MAXIMUM PRESSURE).
4. APPLY A THIN BEAD OF GM GASKET MAKER (P/N 1052942) PARALLEL TO THE SEAL RUNNING THROUGH THE CENTERLINE OF THE BOLT HOLES, BUT NOT THROUGH THE BOLT HOLES. STARTING FROM THE FRONT OF THE BLOCK, THE BEAD SHOULD BE ABOUT 1 MM THICK UNTIL THE FIRST BOLT HOLE AND EXPAND TO 2.5 TO 3 MM THICK FROM THE FIRST TO THE THIRD BOLT HOLE. AFTER THE THIRD BOLT HOLE, THE BEAD SHOULD BE REDUCED TO 1 MM UNTIL RUNNING OFF THE END OF THE CRANKCASE. DO NOT CONTINUE THE BEAD ALL THE WAY TO THE REAR MAIN SEAL. (SEE DIAGRAM FOR GASKET MAKER APPLICATION BELOW.)
5. INSTALL LEFT AND RIGHT UPPER TO LOWER CRANKCASE SEALS.
6. REASSEMBLE ENGINE AS NECESSARY USING SERVICE MANUAL PROCEDURES, TORQUING ALL FASTENERS TO SPECIFICATION.
EXCHANGES FOR THIS CONDITION SHOULD BE REPAIRED, REQUESTS FOR ENGINE EXCHANGES WILL BE DENIED.
FOR ADDITIONAL DETAILS REGARDING THE ENGINE EXCHANGE PROGRAM, PLEASE SEE BULLETIN 57-61-31.
