EXCESSIVE WHINE NOISE FROM CENTER I/P SPEAKER

SUBJECT: EXCESSIVE WHINE NOISE FROM CENTER I/P SPEAKER (RUN A NEW BATTERY WIRE TO RSS MODULE IN TRUNK)

MODELS: 1995 CADILLAC CONCOURS, DEVILLE WITH RSS SYSTEM

CONDITION:

SOME OWNERS MAY COMMENT ON EXCESSIVE WHINE NOISE COMING FROM THE CENTER I/P SPEAKER ON VEHICLES WITH THE RSS SYSTEM.

CAUSE:

CONDITION MAY BE DUE TO VOLTAGE COUPLING BETWEEN THE RSS BATTERY WIRE AND SPEAKER WIRES.

CORRECTION:

RUN A NEW BATTERY WIRE TO THE RSS MODULE IN THE TRUNK USING THE FOLLOWING PROCEDURE.

1. DISCONNECT VEHICLE BATTERY.

2. REMOVE REAR SEAT.

3. LOWER ELECTRONICS BAY.

4. DISCONNECT RSS MODULE.

5. RECONNECT THE BATTERY AND TEST THE AUDIO SYSTEM.

6. DISCONNECT BATTERY.

7. IF THE SPEAKER WHINE IS NOT PRESENT WHEN THE RSS MODULE IS DISCONNECTED:

A. RAISE CARPETING TO REVEAL DRIVER SIDE ELECTRICAL CONDUIT.

B. LOCATE THE RSS MODULE POWER FEED, CKT 1540 (ORN), CONNECTOR C3 TERMINAL A. REFER TO SECTION 8A-10 IN THE SERVICE MANUAL.

C. CUT THE RSS MODULE POWER FEED AS FAR TOWARD THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE AS POSSIBLE, AND TAPE BACK THE SIDE THAT LEADS TO THE RSS MODULE.

D. CUT THE POWER FEED WIRE, CKT 1540 (ORN), APPROXIMATELY SIX INCHES BACK FROM RSS MODULE CONNECTOR C3, TERMINAL A. TAPE BACK THE CONDUIT SIDE OF THE WIRE.

E. INSTALL A NEW PIECE OF ORANGE 10 GAUGE WIRE FROM WHERE CKT 1540 (ORN) WAS CUT TO THE RSS MODULE CONNECTOR C3, TERMINAL A, FOLLOWING THE EXISTING CONDUIT.

F. SPLICE AND SOLDER THE NEW WIRE TO THE BATTERY SIDE OF CKT 1540 (ORN). REFER TO SECTION 8A-5 OF THE SERVICE MANUAL FOR SPLICING AND WIRE REPAIR INFORMATION.

G. SPLICE AND SOLDER THE OTHER END OF THE NEW WIRE TO THE REMAINING CKT 1540 (ORN) PIGTAIL COMING FROM RSS MODULE CONNECTOR C3, TERMINAL A.

H. ATTACH THE NEW RSS MODULE POWER FEED WIRE TO THE OUTSIDE OF THE EXISTING CONDUIT WITH TIE STRAPS.

7. IF THE SPEAKER WHINE IS PRESENT WITH THE RSS MODULE DISCONNECTED:

A. USING SHIELDED WIRE, REPLACE CENTER I/P SPEAKER CKT'S 1860 (YEL) AND 1960 (LT BLU) BETWEEN THE ACTIVE AUDIO AMPLIFIER AND THE CENTER I/P SPEAKER.

B. MAKE SURE THE ORIGINAL WIRING FOR CKT'S 1860 (YEL) AND 1960 (LT BLU) HAVE BEEN DISCONNECTED AT BOTH ENDS.

8. RECONNECT BATTERY.

9. TURN VEHICLE "ON", ENGINE "OFF".

10. ENTER ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTICS AND CLEAR ANY RSS CODES.

11. IF THE RSS MODULE DOESN'T RESPOND, MAKE SURE CONNECTIONS, SPLICES, AND GROUNDS ARE CLEAN AND TIGHT.

12. RETURN VEHICLE TO ORIGINAL STATUS.
