TBI FUEL INJECTOR REMOVAL PROCEDURES TO REDUCE DAMAGE

REVISED PROCEDURE FOR REMOVING DFI/DEFI FUEL INJECTORS

Removing a fuel injector using pliers, as described in the CadiUac Service Information Manual for 1980-1982 DFI/DEFI equipped vehicles, may damage the injector. This bulletin outlines a revised procedure for removing and installing DFI/DEFI injectors; the updated sections of this procedure are highlighted in the shaded areas.

Injector Removal

1. Raise hood, cover fenders and remove air cleaner.

2. Remove injector electrical connectors.

3. Remove eight attaching screws and remove fuel meter cover assembly.

4. With the fuel meter cover gasket in place to prevent damage to the casting, use a screwdriver, as shown in Figure 1, to lift the injector carefully until it is free from the fuel meter body.

5. Remove injector.

6. Remove large "O" ring and steel back-up washer at top counterbore of the fuel meter body injector cavity, Figure 2. Remove small "O" ring located at bottom of injector cavity.

Injector Installation

1. Lubricate with clean automatic transmission fluid and install a new small "O" ring over the injector nozzle.

2. Position the large "O" ring back-up washer and a new lubricated large "O" ring in top counterbore of the fuel meter body injector cavity.

4. Position the injector into the fuel meter body. After centering the nozzle into the cavity, install the injector using hand pressure.

5. Install fuel meter cover as described in Cadillac Service Information Manual.

6. Install injector electrical connectors.

7. Start engine and check for leaks and proper injector operation.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
