LOSS OF DRIVE AND REVERSE - THM 350-C
1982 C-cars equipped with a 5.7 liter diesel engine and a THM 350-C transmission may experience a loss of drive and reverse. This condition can be caused by excessive pinion runout in the output carrier resulting in separation of the input shaft from the forward clutch housing (refer to Figure below).
To correct this condition and prevent the possibility of a recurrence, replace the output carrier (P/N 1250023) along with the forward clutch housing (P/N 360943). The input shaft can be pressed out of the original housing and reused. Carefully inspect and, if necessary, replace all worn transmission bushings, especially the input ring bushing (P/N 8641117).
For warranty purposes, use Operation K7280 at 3.4 hours and ADD .1 hour for any bushing replaced.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
