DRIVE LINE RATTLE 2004R/ 200C TRANSMISSION

DRIVE-LINE RATTLE - THM 200C

A drive-line rattle experienced on 1980 and 1981 diesel equipped C-cars with THM 200C transmissions may be caused by the splined portion of the transmission's rear internal gear vibrating against the output shaft. This drive-line rattle (a medium, heavy metallic noise) is most noticeable during and after torque converter clutch application.

To correct this condition in production, the rear internal gear was press fit onto the output shaft, resulting in a one-piece assembly, effective in October, 1981. Early production vehicles exhibiting this condition can be corrected by replacing both the original output shaft and rear internal gear with the service one-piece press fit assembly (P/N 8633910).

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
