THIS BULLETIN CONTAINS MULTIPLE SUBJECTS. PAGE THROUGH TO DESIRED SUBJECT.

MISCELLANEOUS QSI ( QUICK SERVICE INFORMATION) ITEMS

GR. 0 LABOR OPERATIONS AND TIMES - HOOD MOLDING, SWR, WINDOW, OIL PAN, AND MAIN SEAL

- PLEASE CORRECT OPERATION B7340, MOLDING, HOOD PANEL REAR - R&R OR REPLACE (PAGE B-1D, 1980 LABOR TIME GUIDE) BY DELETING THE 0.3 HR TIME ALLOWANCE FOR THE "E" SERIES.

- ADD: OPERATION B7360, MOLDING, SHROUD UPPER AND/OR VENT GRILL - R&R OR REPLACE, TO PAGE B1D OF THE 1980 LABOR TIME GUIDE, WITH A TIME ALLOWANCE OF 0.3 HOUR FOR "E" AND "K" SERIES.

- BECAUSE THE ONLY TIME THE SWR (STANDING WAVE RATIO) VOLTAGE NEEDS TO BE CHECKED IS WHEN THE LOADING COIL IS REPLACED, THE ADD "TO CHECK SWR" (PUBLISHED UNDER R0480 IN THE JANUARY, 1981 REVISION PAGES) SHOULD ONLY APPLY TO R0435, LOADING COIL. THE COMPLETE ASSEMBLY (R0480) IS PRESET, WHEN MANUFACTURED, AND DOES NOT RE- QUIRE THE SWR CHECK. PLEASE NOTE THIS CORRECTION ON PAGE R-14 OF THE 1981 LABOR TIME GUIDE (JANUARY, 1981 REVISION PAGES).

- TIME ALLOWANCE IS INCREASED ON C0182 AND C0183 "REGULATOR, FONT DOOR WINDOW - R&R OR REPLACE" (PAGE C-2A, 1980 LTG) FROM .8 HOUR "ALL" TO 1.0 HOUR "ALL".

- TIME ALLOWANCE IS INCREASED ON N3315 "MOTOR , DOOR WINDOW - REPLACE (PAGE N-6A, 1980 AND 1981 LTG) FROM .8 HOUR "C" AND "K" SERIES TO 1.0 HOUR "C" AND "K" SERIES.

- TIME ALLOWANCE IS INCREASED ON J1000 (DFI ENGINE) "PAN AND/OR GASKET, OIL - REPLACE" (PAGE J-5B, 1981 LTG) FROM 3.7 HOURS "E" AND "K" SERIES TO 4.2 HOURS "E" AND "K" SERIES.

GR. 3D 1981 ELC DIAGNOSTIC REVISION

IN FIGURE 3D-27 TITLED "ELC DIAGNOSTIC CHART - PROCEDURE 1-2 , ON PAGE 3D-21 OF THE 1981 SERVICE MANUAL, THE STEP ILLUSTRATED AT THE TOP OF PAGE 2 SHOULD HAVE THE FOLLOWING NOTE ADDED TO IT, IN ORDER TO AVOID A POSSIBLE MISLEADING DIAGNOSIS:

ON DFI ENGINES, THE IGNITION SWITCH MUST BE ON WITH ENGINE RUNNING. THIS APPLIES TO THIS STEP ONLY. FOR ANY OTHER TEST, ENGINE MUST BE STOPPED, AND SWITCH OFF BEFORE THE HARNESS CONNECTION IS RESTORED.

GR. 3E 1981 WIRE WHEEL COVER NOISE REPAIRS (E AND K MODELS)

TO CORRECT A CUSTOMER COMMENT OF SQUEAKING OR RATTLING WIRE WHEEL COVERS ON 1981 SEVILLES AND/OR ELDORADOS, REFER TO SERVICEMAN BULLETIN 80-32 FOR STEP 5 SHOULD READ: "REPEAT STEP 4, 12 TIMES, SPACING THE STAKES EQUALLY AROUND THE OUTER EDGE OF THE WHEEL DISC".

WARRANTY INFORMATION

FOR WARRANTY PURPOSES, USE OPERATION NUMBER T6008 AT 0.2 HOUR FOR EACH COVER.

GR. 4B REAR AXLE FLUSHING PROCEDURE OPERATION AND TIME

IF IT IS NECESSARY TO PERFORM THE LIMITED SLIP REAR AXLE FLUSHING PROCEDURE, GIVEN IN SECTION 4B OF THE 1981 CADILLAC SERVICE INFOR- MATION MANUAL, WITHIN THE WARRANTY PERIOD, USE OPERATION NO. T6035 WITH A TIME ALLOWANCE OF 0.7 HOUR.

GR. 6C SERVICEMAN BULLETIN 81-14 UPDATE

UPDATE SERVICEMAN BULLETIN 81-14 WITH THE FOLLOWING INFORMAT ON WHICH WAS NOT AVAILABLE AT THE TIME OF PUBLICATION:

C-CALIF. - GENERATION 1 BREAKPOINT - 100001 THROUGH 143985 C-CALIF. - GENERATION 2 BREAKPOINT - AFTER 143985. C-CALIF. - GENERATION 2 EGR VALVE SERVICE P/N 17068210.

GR. 6D DIESEL ROUGH IDLE GLOW PLUG RESISTANCE PROCEDURE

A NOZZLE WITH A TIP LEAK CAN ALLOW MORE FUEL THAN NORMAL INTO THE CYLINDER WHICH WILL RAISE THE GLOW PLUG OHM READING. THIS WILL ROB FUEL FROM THE NEXT NOZZLE IN THE FIRING SEQUENCE AND WILL RESULT IN THAT GLOW PLUG HAVING A LOW OHM READING. IF THIS IS ENCOUNTERED IT IS ADVISABLE TO REMOVE, AND CHECK THE NOZZLE WITH A HIGH READING; IF IT IS LEAKING IT COULD BE CAUSING THE ROUGH IDLE.

SOME GLOW PLUGS HAVE BEEN FOUND WHICH DO NOT INCREASE IN RESISTANCE WITH HEAT. IF YOU EXPERIENCE LOW READINGS ON A GLOW PLUG AND IT DOES NOT CHANGE WITH NOZZLE CHANGE, SWITCH GLOW PLUG BETWEEN A GOOD AND BAD CYLINDER. IF THE READING OF EACH CYLINDER IS NOT THE SAME AS BEFORE THE SWITCH, THE GLOW PLUG CANNOT BE USED FOR ROUGH IDLE DIAGNOSIS ALTHOUGH IT WILL FUNCTION FOR STARTING THE CAR.

GR. 6D 1981 C-CAR V-6 DRIVEABILITY

1981 V-6 EQUIPPED DEVILLES AND BROUGHAMS BUILT BEFORE BROADCAST NUMBER 112658 MAY EXHIBIT POOR DRIVEABILITY QUALITIES. THIS CAN BE CAUSED BY THE ELECTRONIC SPARK CONTROL (ESC) SYSTEM SENSING ENGINE VIBRATIONS THAT ARE NOT SPARK KNOCK OR DETONATION SENSOR CONNECTOR (LOCATED AT THE REAR OF THE ENGINE BLOCK). IF THE DRIVEABILITY IMPROVES, REPLACE THE ESC MODULE, P/N 1224745. ALL MODULES IN- STALL ON AFTER-NUMBER VEHICLES AND THOSE IN GMWDD STOCK HAVE BEEN MODIFIED TO SENSE DETONATION ONLY. THE MODIFIED MODULES CAN BE IDENTIFIED BY A RED OR PURPLE NUMBER 10, 11 OR 12 STAMPED ON THE PART NUMBER LABEL. RETURN REPLACED ESC MODULES TO GMWDD FOR CORE CREDIT.

GR. 7 PRESSURE REGULATOR VALVE "BUZZ" ON THM 200-4R AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION

ON SOME THM 200-4R EQUIPPED VEHICLES, AN OCCASIONAL "BUZZ" OR "RATTLE SOUND MAY BE HEARD COMING FROM THE TRANSMISSION. THIS IS PARTICULARLY PREVALENT UNDER LOW OIL CONDITIONS AND IS A RESULT OF A TEMPORARY INSTABILITY IN THE PRESSURE REGULATOR VALVE. THIS CONDITION IS NOT A MALFUNCTION, AND NO REPAIRS SHOULD BE ATTEMPTED; NO DAMAGE WILL OCCUR TO THE TRANSMISSION BECAUSE OF THIS INSTABILITY HOWEVER, THE TRANSMISSION SHOULD BE CHECKED TO BE SURE THAT THE OIL LEVEL IS CORRECT.

GR. 7 THM 200-4R TRANSMISSION PUMP REMOVAL PROCEDURE

TO REMOVE THE 200-4R FRONT PUMP ASSEMBLY, FIRST REMOVE THE BOTTOM PAN, OIL FILTER AND SOLENOID ASSEMBLY. BREAKAGE WILL OCCUR TO THE FILTER AND SOLENOID NECKS IF THEY ARE NOT REMOVED PRIOR TO PUMP REMOVAL.

THE DISASSEMBLY PROCEDURE IN THE 1981 SERVICE MANUAL MAY BE USED FOR THE PUMP REMOVAL REFERENCE AFTER THE ABOVE STEPS HAVE BEEN PERFORMED.

GR. 8 REPLACEMENT OF 20 AMP ECS BATTERY FUSE

DO NOT REPLACE THE 20 AMP ECS BATTERY FUSE WITH THE IGNITION IN THE ON POSITION. IF THE ECM RECEIVES VOLTAGE ON CIRCUIT #480 AFTER AL- READY HAVING RECEIVED VOLTAGE ON CIRCUIT #439, ECM DAMAGE COULD RESULT. THE SYMPTOM WOULD BE EITHER NO ECM "POWER-UP" AT IGNIION ON OR NO ECM "POWER -DOWN" AT IGNITION OFF. IF THE ECM FAILED TO "POWER-DOWN", AN OVERNIGHT BATTERY DRAIN WOULD RESULT.

GR. 8 DFI THIRD GEAR SWITCH TEST

ON PAGE 8D-122 OF THE SERVICE MANUAL, THE FIRST PARAGRAPH SUGGEST USING A TEST LIGHT TO INDICATE WHETHER CIRCUIT #487 IS AT 5 VOLTS OR GROUND. THIS CIRCUIT SHOULD INSTEAD BE TESTED WITH A VOLTMETER SINCE THE AVAILABLE CURRENT MAY NOT BE ADEQUATE TO ILLUMINATE THE TEST LIGHT.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
