CONDITION A REDUCTION OF POWER STEERING ASSIST MAY BE TEMPORARILY EXPERIENCED IMMEDIATELY AFTER A COLD START WHEN THE ENGINE IS SLOW IDLING ON 1982 VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A 5.7L DIESEL ENGINE. BEFORE DIAGNOSING THIS CONDITION, VERIFY THAT: 1.THE COLD IDLE SOLENOID IS OPERATING. 2.THE CORRECT STARTING PROCEDURE IS USED. (THROTTLE MUST BE DEPRESSED TO ALLOW THE FAST IDLE SOLENOID TO EXTEND). 3.THE FAST IDLE IS SET TO SPECIFICATION. IF IT IS DETERMINED THAT THE FAST IDLE SPEED IS CORRECT, THE CONDITION MAY BE CAUSED BY THE POWER STEERING PUMP VANES STICKING IN THE ROTOR. CORRECTION TO CORRECT THIS CONDITION, IT WILL BE NECESSARY TO REPLACE THE POWER STEERING PUMP VANES WITH VANE KIT NO. 7842165, AVAILABLE FROM WDDGM. THE NEW VANES ARE .005 MM (.0002") THINNER TO ALLOW FOR A BETTER FIT IN THE PUMP ROTOR. PUMP SEAL KIT NO. 5688044 WILL ALSO BE REQUIRED. PROCEDURE WHEN USING THE FOLLOWING PROCEDURE IT WILL BE NECESSARY TO INSTALL NEW "O" RING SEALS AT THE RESERVOIR (4 SEALS), END PLATE AND PRESSURE PLATE (2 SEALS), AND THE CONTROL VALVE FITTING (1 SEAL). BECAUSE IT IS NOT NECESSARY TO REMOVE THE PULLEY, DRIVE SHAFT OR ROTOR, THE DRIVE SHAFT SEAL IN THE POWER STEERING PUMP SEAL KIT MAY BE DISCARDED. 1.REMOVE POWER STEERING PUMP AS FOLLOWS, LEAVING FRONT (ADJUSTMENT) BRACKET AND PULLEY ON PUMP ASSEMBLY (SEE FIG. 1). A.REMOVE AIR INLET HOSE AT AIR CLEANER. B.LOOSEN AND DISCONNECT GENERATOR AND POWER STEERING BELTS. C.REMOVE CRUISE CONTROL SERVO MOUNT NUT AND MOUNT BOLT, LAY SERVO TO SIDE. D.DISCONNECT PRESSURE AND RETURN HOSES AT PUMP. E.REMOVE NUT AND BOLT ATTACHING GENERATOR BRACKET TO PUMP ADJUSTING BRACKET. F.REMOVE NUT FROM BACK SIDE OF PUMP. REMOVE ADJUSTER BRACKET TO SUPPORT BRACKET BOLT. REMOVE FRONT BRACKET TO ENGINE MOUNT NUT. G.REMOVE PUMP ASSEMBLY WITH PULLEY AND FRONT BRACKET ATTACHED. 2.REMOVE CONTROL VALVE FITTING, VALVE AND SPRING, AND 2 RESERVOIR RETAINING BOLTS. REMOVE RESERVOIR. 3.REMOVE END PLATE RETAINING RING, END PLATE AND SPRING (SEE FIG.2). 4.REMOVE PRESSURE PLATE USING NEEDLE-NOSE PLIERS TO GRASP AT FLUID PASSAGES AND GENTLY ROCK PLATE UP AND OUT OF HOUSING (SEE FIG.2). 5.REMOVE PUMP VANES FROM ROTOR USING A CLEAN MAGNET. IT IS NOT NECESSARY TO REMOVE PUMP RING, HOWEVER, IF IT IS REMOVED FOR INSPECTION IT SHOULD BE REINSTALLED WITH THE CAST ARROW AT EDGE OF RING FACING UPWARD (SEE FIG.2). 6.LUBRICATE VANES WITH CLEAN POWER STEERING FLUID AND INSTALL IN ROTOR WITH ROUNDED EDGE FACING OUTWARD. IF BOTH EDGES OF REPLACEMENT VANES ARE ROUNDED, THEY MAY BE INSTALLED IN EITHER DIRECTION. 7.LUBRICATE NEW "O" RING SEALS WITH CLEAN POWER STEERING FLUID AND REASSEMBLE PUMP. 8.REINSTALL POWER STEERING PUMP ASSEMBLY AND ADJUST BELT TENSION TO 400 N (90 LBS.) General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
