HT4100-equipped 1985 Devilles and Fleetwoods built before Vehicle Identification (broadcast) Number 372276 may have been manufactured with incorrectly calibrated engine oil dipsticks. These dipsticks will read approximately 1/2 to 3/4 quart low when the correct amount of oil is in the crankcase (see Figure 1). Vehicles manufactured after broadcast number 372276 have dipsticks that are correctly calibrated. These new dipsticks can be identified by the new part number (1634398) stamped on the stick.
If you encounter a condition of incorrect dipstick reading on an early vehicle, the dipstick tube length should be measured as indicated in Figure 2. If this dimension is 6 1/4 to 6 3/8 in., the tube is correct and the dipstick should be replaced with a new dipstick. If the tube dimension is less than specified, replace the tube according to the procedure in the Service Information Manual and install the new dipstick.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
