BCM/DFI Course Content - A communication process has been incorporated which electrically links the Body Computer Moduel (BCM) to the Electronic Control Module (ECM) to allow transfer of information back and forth. Both modules will be providing diagnostic features similar to those found currently with 1984 DFI; however, all diagnostic control buttons and displays are controlled by the BCM. Any diagnostic feature requested for the ECM is accomplished automatically via the BCM/ECM communication process.
Outside of this communication link and the information shared between the two modules, the BCM and ECM control their systems independently. The following summarizes the new diagnostic features associated with the BCM as well as changes which were incorporated with the ECM diagnostics.
15 BCM trouble codes 6 BCM status indicators 12 BCM data parameters 2 BCM override modes ECM trouble codes, switch tests and output cyclind redesigned to incorporate changed inputs and outputs. All diagnostics control will utilize Climate Control panel buttons.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
