HOOD FLUTTER OR VIBRATION INSUFFICIENT LOAD ON HOOD

VEHICLES AFFECTED: 1985 FWD DEVILLE AND FLEETWOOD ------------------------------

Hood flutter or hood vibration may be encountered while driving some 1985 Front-Wheel-Drive Devilles and Fleetwoods. Hood flutter is normally a result of an insufficient load upon the rubber hood stops. To repair condition, the following procedure should be performed:

1. Inspect hood to fender alignment to determine if hood panel fits flush to fenders, if misaligned, perform step 2; if aligned, proceed to step 3.

2. Raise hood panel and adjust rubber hood stops as necessary to align hood panel flush to fenders (Figure 1).

3. Loosen primary hood latch mounting screws (Figure 2) and lower primary hood latch 1/16 inch.

4. Tighten primary hood latch mounting screws to 9 N.m. (80 in.lbs.) .

5. Close hood panel and recheck fit.

After this procedure is completed, a load must be on the hood stops. This load will eliminate hood flutter.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
