CADILLAC MOTOR CAR DIVISION HAS DETERMINED THAT CERTAIN 1985 FRONT- WHEEL-DRIVE FLEETWOOD AND DEVILLE MODELS EQUIPPED WITH 4.1 LITER V8 DFI ENGINES MIGHT EXPERIENCE ONE OR BOTH OF TWO CONDITIONS: (1) THE WATER PUMP PULLEY HUB MIGHT SEPARATE FROM THE WATER PUMP SHAFT. THIS WOULD RESULT IN LOSS OF THE WATER PUMP DRIVE BELT AND COULD CAUSE ENGINE OVERHEATING POSSIBLY RESULTING IN ENGINE DAMAGE. (2) SOME OF THE VEHICLES MIGHT EXPERIENCE CAPACITOR FAILURE IN THE ELECTRONIC CLIMATE CONTROL (ECC) POWER MODULE. IF THIS WERE TO OCCUR IT COULD CAUSE ILLUMINATION OF THE "SERVICE NOW" LIGHT AND STATIC INTERFERENCE IN THE RADIO SOUND SYSTEM. TO PREVENT THESE CONDITIONS FROM OCCURRING, DEALERS WILL BE REQUIRED TO REPLACE WATER PUMPS ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES, AND REPLACE ECC POWER MODULES ON PART OF THE VEHICLES, ACCORDING TO THE VIN RANGES AND SERVICE PROCEDURES CONTAINED IN THIS BULLETIN. VEHICLES INVOLVED ALL 1985 FWD FLEETWOOD AND DEVILLE MODELS WITHIN THE FOLLOWING VIN RANGES: - REPLACE ECC POWER MODULE AND WATER PUMP. (4.1 LITER V8 DFI-ENGINE CODE 8): ORION PLANT FROM F4200001 THROUGH F4234578 - REPLACE ONLY THE WATER PUMP. (4.1 LITER GASOLINE-ENGINE CODE 8): ORION PLANT FROM F4234579 THROUGH F4248478 PARTS INFORMATION THE FOLLOWING PARTS WILL BE REQUIRED FOR WATER PUMP OR ECC POWER MODULE REPLACEMENT. THEY ARE AVAILABLE FROM THE PARTS DISTRIBUTION CENTERS OF THE GENERAL MOTORS WAREHOUSING AND DISTRIBUTION DIVISION: PART NUMBER DESCRIPTION QUANTITY 3634606 WATER PUMP KIT 1 PER VEHICLE 1052753 ETHYLENE GLYCOL BASE COOLANT APPROXIMATELY 1.5 GAL. EQUIVALENT TO GM SPEC. 1825M PER VEHICLE 16050676 ECC POWER MODULE 1 PER VEHICLE IF THERE IS DIFFICULTY OBTAINING THESE PARTS USING NORMAL ORDERING PROCEDURES, DEALERS MAY PLACE A C.I.O. USING ADVISE CODE "2" WITH NO SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS CODE. THE PARTS MAY ALSO BE ORDERED ON A V.I.P. ORDER; HOWEVER, UNLESS PRIOR ZONE APPROVAL IS OBTAINED, DEALERS WILL BE REQUIRED TO ABSORB ANY SURCHARGE INVOLVED UNDER THE V.I.P. SYSTEM. IF ANY PROBLEMS ARE ENCOUNTERED IN OBTAINING THESE PARTS, PLEASE FOLLOW THE THREE STEP PROCEDURE AS STATED IN THE GM PARTS EMERGENCY ORDER FOLLOW-UP PROCEDURE (REFER TO GM PARTS POLICY AND PROCEDURE MANUAL, SECTION IV, PAGES 32 AND 33, AUGUST 1984 EDITION). SERVICE PROCEDURE WATER PUMP REMOVAL CAUTION: WITH A PRESSURIZED COOLING SYSTEM, COOLANT TEMPERATURE IN THE RADIATOR CAN BE CONSIDERABLY HIGHER THAN THE BOILING POINT OF THE SOLUTION AT ATMOSPHERIC PRESSURE. REMOVAL OF THE RADIATOR CAP, WHILE THE COOLING SYSTEM IS HOT AND UNDER HIGH PRESSURE, WILL CAUSE THE SOLUTION TO BOIL INSTANTANEOUSLY WITH EXPLOSIVE FORCE, SPEWING THE SOLUTION OVER ENGINE, FENDERS AND PERSONS NEARBY. IF THE SOLUTION CONTAINS FLAMMABLE ANTI-FREEZE SUCH AS ALCOHOL (NOT RECOMMENDED FOR USE AT ANY TIME), THERE IS ALSO THE POSSIBILITY OF CAUSING A SERIOUS FIRE. NOTE: FOR ADDITIONAL GUIDANCE REFER TO THE SERVICE PROCEDURE AND FIGURES ON PAGES 6B-10 AND 6B-11 ON THE 1985 CADILLAC FRONT WHEEL DRIVE DEVILLE AND FLEETWOOD SERVICE MANUAL. 1. DISCONNECT THE NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE. 2. REMOVE THE RADIATOR CAP WHEN THE ENGINE IS COOL. A. TURN THE CAP SLOWLY TO THE LEFT UNTIL IT REACHES A STOP. DO NOT PRESS DOWN WHILE TURNING THE CAP. B. General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
