When disassembling THM 440-T4 transaxles, the word 'up' may be noted on the 4th clutch apply plate, figure 1, and the input clutch apply plate, figure 2. During reassembly of these parts back into the transaxle, follow these instructions:
1. Position the side of the 4th clutch apply plate that has the word 'up' stamped on it, against the 4th clutch piston. (see Fig. 1).
2. Position the side of the input clutch apply plate that has the work 'up' stamped on it (stepped side) against the 3rd clutch backing plate snap ring (see Fig. 2).
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
