LOOSE AND/OR FALL OUT CENTER WHEEL CAPS PROCEDURE

VEHICLES AFFECTED: 1985 NINETY EIGHTS

The centre caps on aluminum wheels (Option N78) may be loose and/or fall out. The common cause of this condition is bent retainer tabs (Figure A) caused by driving the caps on without piloting the tabs in the wheel opening properly.

1. Using flat nose pliers, bend tabs back to the original position as shown in Figure B. Clean the area behind each tab with a good solvent to remove oil/grease.

2. Apply a urethane compound such as 3MO5900 Flexible Parts Repair Material (or equivalent) behind the retainer tab as shown in Figure C.

When installing the cap on the wheel:

1. Position 2 tabs in the opening.

2. Start the 3rd tab into the opening and push or bump into place.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
