Some 1982-1985 Broughams, 1982-1990 DeVilles, Fleetwoods, Eldorados, and Sevilles, and 1987-1990 Allantes equipped with the 4.1L or 4.5L engine may experience a code 53, E53, or E053. The intermittent code may be caused by a momentary internal open in the distributor pick-up coil. The customer may have experienced a miss, stumble, hesitation, sag, or engine stall. Should the vehicle experience a stall, the engine will restart immediately. Trouble code diagnosis may lead to an intermittent condition.
To repair this condition use the following procedure:
1. Perform trouble code diagnosis.
2. Check circuit 430 for an intermittent open or short to ground.
3. Check circuit 453 for an intermittent open.
4. Check for loss of battery power to B+ terminal of the distributor.
5. Check ignition switch contact timing.
6. Replace pick up coil. Refer to Section 6D of the appropriate Service Information Manual.
For warranty purposes use Labor Operation J4460 with the appropriate time from the applicable Labor Time Guide.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
